Trying to Get Pregnant

Pre-natal vitamins

My doctor advised me to star taking prenatals before I conceive.  Which ones are you taking?  I looked at the vitamin isle the other day and there are many to choose from.  Which one is the best?  What should I be looking for in a prenatal vitamin?

Re: Pre-natal vitamins

  • I cant not swallow big pills and I read something bad about the gummy vita-craves(think thats what they are called) so I went and bought the kids Flintstones Complete.  I take two each morning so I get my 800mg of Folic Acid and everything else important.
My Ovulation Chart Hoping for a shamrock baby....Grandma, I know you are up there looking down on me. March and St Patrick's Day is a very special time for all of us. It would be amazing to find out I was pregnant in March! Please send me all your Irish luck (been trying for 7 months and I need it!) I Love you! XOXOXOXO

You want a prenatal vitamin that has 800 mcg Folic acid.

Before I got pregnant, I took Nature Made.  I thought they were great and they had what I needed (except DHA, but I don't know how helpful DHA is before pregnancy).  Once I got pregnant, swallowing pills made me vomit, so I switched to the VitaFusion gummies which I really like.  They have DHA which is good, but they don't have iron, so if you are prone to anemia, it could be an issue.

I take Nature Made prenatals. They actually are made with DHA now. Although, like you said, I have no idea if that has any value before pregnancy.

  • Actually, for folic acid the recommendation is 0.4mg (400mcg) per day. More is not necessarily better.

Sorry I was just researching some more and found some data that does recommend a max of 0.8mg...i stand corrected.

  • I am taking the target brand prenatals.  When I get pregnant, I will switch back to Prenate Elite. It has extra iron, which I need because of anemia, and it helped my morning sickness.  My pharmacist explained to me why this was, but I can't remember why, but I noticed a huge difference.
  • I take the Nature Made Multi Prenatal.  They don't have DHA, are USP verified and don't have artifical colors, flavors or preservatives.

this is what I did too.

  • I completely grabbed the wrong flinstones gummies...I meant to grab the "complete" ones bc they have enough folic acid....grabbed the regular ones by mistake...only giving me 200 of folic acid. grr.

I cant take the horse pills either...they make me so sick to my stomach.

  • I just take One a days
  • I take the Target brand ones without DHA until I get pregnant and then will switch to something else but for now, that is what I take.  I know that I saw some gummy ones on the shelf, if you don't like pills.

  • I take the CVS brand.

DHA is good for everyone so you should take it regardless.

I take Rainbow Light Prenatal One, they carry them at Target. They are really easy on your stomach and have no artifical colors, flavors, etc.  I also have the VitaFusion gummies that I take on nights that I simply don't feel like swallowing a pill. They taste soooo good!

  • I recently switched to the Vitafusion Gummies. I was using Equaline brand (a store brand here) but had a lot of GI problems. Like PP said the Vitafusion ones do not contain iron. My hemoglobin is always great and so my OB said we'll just check it while I'm pregnant but as long as I'm doing okay she doesn't mind if I do iron-free PNVs.

  • I take one a day gummies. They aren't prenatals but they have the folic acid. Everything else made me incredibly sick.
