Don't know about the sippy cup, but my pedi said we could start giving LO a little water when we wanted to get him used to drinking neutral liquids (although, we live in the desert, so this might be different out here)
I was planning on waiting until LO was eating some table/finger foods and needing less formula.
We JUST started introducing a few purees, and he LO's already eating a few less ounces of formula a day. I assume he would drink even less if he was getting water as well.
I've already loosely introduced it, but that's mostly because my DS was very picky about his sippy cup and it was a struggle w/ him (as was most anything related to him taking a bottle/sippy) I think I intro'd it to him at like 8/9 months?? I've just been giving it to her and she knaws on it. She certainly has no idea how to use it, but she's also not holding her bottle on her own.
DD doesn't "get" the idea of holding it up, so I gave her a sucky one (with a straw) and then she didn't grasp sucking... i dunno. she has fun with it though.
About 6 weeks ago when I introduced foods to DD I also introduced the sippy cup with water. Sometimes I mix it up and add a splash of apple juice too. She doesnt hold her cup on her own, and I only give it to her with her food, this way water if with food and a bottle is for formula... I read somewhere that later down the line this helps ween them from a bottle
She watches me drink water at dinner and starts moving her mouth like she wants to drink. Tried sharing with her once but that resulted in back wash. (Ewww)
So I use a plastic cup and help her drink small amounts at a time. I tried her sippy cup which is very similar to her bottle (NUK Air System) but it came out too fast for her. So she is very happy with a cup and she tries to help me when she drinks but sometimes get a little too much at a time.
I was going to ask the same thing because I saw that Tommie Tippee has a sippy cup for babies as young as 4 month old, so I was wondering if we should try. We did, we gave it to him but he has no idea how to use it. He won't grab both handles just one and he mostly played with it. Re the water I read somewhere it's advised not to give water at least for the first 6 months and that if fact kids don't even need water until a year old. Not my opinion, just what I read. But I think I might start giving him water in a sippy when he has grasped the concept of food around 9 months ish?
I am glad you areasking these questions! Does anyone have recommendations on sippy cups? I bought one for DS about 2 months ago thinking I may start lettig him play with it, but I never did. He will be 6 months old next week so I think I am about to venture into solids and sippy cups at the same time. Should you stick with the same brand as your bottles? For instance, he uses Dr. Brown's bottles so should he have a Dr. Brown's sippy?
I introduced the sippy cup around 3.5 months. First I held it for her and let her learn how to sip out of it. I used water. When they first learn about the cup they get very little liquid down their throat. They have to learn how to suck liquid out of this new device and then lots of liquid drips out of their mouth. So the water she drank was very minimal. Now she is better with the cup. She will drink up to 6oz out of it(now I use bm.) I still assist her, but she knows how to pick it up and drink from it. She still has some trouble holding it up high enough at times, but I always supervise her with it and I encourage her to play around with it. We are still practicing, but I like that it has opened her up to the idea of getting her liquids from other sources. She has shown interest in sipping from regular cups(grabs for it, and brings it properly to her mouth while she sucks at it) but I don't ever let her get a sip or even hold it by herself since I think she still needs a lot of practice. We use the foogo cup by thermos. We really like it, no leaks. I like that it is stainless steal and not plastic.
Re: Practicing with a Sippy Cup
I'm curious what others say for this one.

My LO loves to drink water out of a plastic cup.
