January 2011 Moms

How far?

How far away from Christmas do you think your LO's birthday needs to be for it to not be lumped in with Christmas?

My sisters each have a birthday within a month November 30th and January 31st. I never felt like they were lumped in with Christmas or got the Christmas/birthday combo gift. My MIL is December 23rd and nephew is December 18th and they get combo gifts and birthday celebrations all lumped together with Christmas stuff.

Emily's birthday is January 28th and I would be surprised if someone gave her a birthday/Christmas gift.

What about you?

Re: How far?

  • I don't think they should get lumped at all. I know people do that, but I think that sucks for the kid. One of my bffs growing up has a December 25th Birthday, and she always got lumped. She hates it to this day. Hopefully our January babies won't have that problem.

  • I don't think they should get lumped either. I hope it didn't come off that way. I was just wondering how far everyone thinks you have to be from Christmas to safely get away from people lumping. I know that even if you hold a special day for the birthday, there will inevitably be relatives that hand over the birthday/Christmas card & gift to LO.

  • Since Whitney was born on the 4th, but not due till Emily's bday, I bet those who dont see her very often but still give gifts will lump them in when we see them for Christmas.  If that makes any sense!

Like I think Broc's baby was born on the 24th? That will be a little more tricky to seperate the two. I suppose it does stink to some extent, but at the same time its up to the parents to make it twice as fun and memrable.

  • DS was born Jan 25th.  I like that it's a full month after Christmas.  I don't think there will be any lumping.  I would have been sad as a kid if my birthday was not a separate event.

  • My niece was born Dec. 22nd, and we make sure she has a birthday party about a week before Christmas, so that her gifts aren't lumped together.  My friend's daughter was born Dec. 24th, so they celebrate her half birthday in the summer with a big birthday party since her birthday gets a little overshadowed. She's always so excited for her summer birthday!

DS is January 15th, so I feel that's far enough away from Christmas to have his own party.

  • Joaquin's the 24th of December, so she kinda f*cked herself.

My birthday is November 25th, and I frequently got combo gifts, but I had a bunch of family that lived further away so we didn't see them until Christmas.  It made 9 year old me super pouty to see all the decorations up around town and in stores too, even if my birthday fell after Thanksgiving that year (LIKE IT DOES THIS YEAR, poutpout), but I'm kind of a brat.

My dad is giving Joaquin a painting every year as a special gift for her birthday.  H & I also want to pick out something special for her but we're not sure what.

This year we're having her party on her due date, but later on we plan on letting her pick when she has it... maybe one year we'll do a trip to Disney World during the summer if she wants, or we'll go visit some of my family in the cold north for a sledding party.  We'll see.  It depends a bit on a sibling too, because if she has one I can see her wanting her birthday the same time. IDK.

I didn't think you meant that at all. Lol. I was just saying that lumping sucks and relatives are lame for doing that! :)

  • DD's birthday is on Dec 28... so I think she will get lumped together. I don't really care, maybe she won't care until she has siblings and notices, I guess we will worry about that later. DH's birthday is on Jan 22 and he said he would get one present from few relatives for the two occasions but it didn't bother him too much. I also thought about the half birthday thing so that she can have a Summer birthday...but I don't know if people will think I am weird for throwing her a birthday party in the Summer lol. That said, if I were to combine birthday and Christmas presents for a kid in this situation, it would generally be bigger than the individual presents... sooo I don't know.
  • My birthday is in October, TWO whole months away, and I still get lumped gifts. It sucked growing up because I'd get combo gifts for my birthday and then come Christmas I hardly got anything and my sister got a ton of stuff. I know it was even in the long run, but it didn't feel that way growing up.
