Dish/House Question

Currently we have a drying rack next to our sink. When we hand wash things (pots/pans, sippy cups, etc) we just put them in there to dry. We hardly ever hand dry things.

At our new house, we'll have a huge island and our sink will be in the island. I'm debating if we should have a drying rack or not-since it's a more "open" layout (fam rm flows to kitchen flows to eat in area) I'm afraid it'll look tacky and make the kitchen look messy with it out in the open. Thoughts?

Re: Dish/House Question

  • I think it's fine to be out in the open- stick it under the sink for parties/company. It's not an issue here #1 I would never buy anything that doesn't go in the dishwasher #2 my house is so destroyed by the end of the day a dish rack wouldn't be noticeable.

  • You don't need to have extra drying time for bottles, sippy cups, water bottles, even if they went thru the dishwasher?  Ours are still kinda wet, even with a heated dry.  As far as pots and pans, I just dry those quick and just leave them on the stove to completely air dry over night and then put them away in the morning.  We never had any type of drying rack until we had dd for her bottles, but now I don't know if I will get rid of it since DH's workout bottles all need extra drying time too and I use it all the time for that.

But ya, I don't think I would want it on the island.  Is there a counter against the wall nearby that you could have it when you need it, and just put it away when you aren't using it?

  • We have a double sink, so ours sits down in the sink.  I am not sure how I would feel about it on the island.  Wait and see :)

  • We've never used a drying rack.  If we hand wash things, I lay them on a towel next to the sink.  DH dries anything I hand wash after dinner.
  • We don't have a drying rack, because I always just dry the big stuff and put it away. I usually just have a dishtowel down to put things on in the meantime.

I LOVE this drying mat. It's a thick mat and super absorbent. They sell bathmats in the same material and I really want one!

  • Whatever doesn't go in the dishwasher goes on a towel next to the sink to dry.  I put the stuff away in the morning (or towel dry it and put it away right away if we have company or need the counter space.)
