Can someone enlighten me on why these are so bad? They don't exactly scream playboy. It looks like a regular bunny costume with a frilly skirt. If they were wearing crowns and carrying scepters and going as princesses would the costumes be offensive? Or is it just that we as adults equate bunnies with playboy? What would make them better bunny costumes?
I only say because looking back at some of my halloween costumes as a kid, I wore my black ballet leotard and tights with a tail and cat ears to be a cat. I was probably seven. Was I trying to be a sexy cat? No. Did my mom think that putting me in my ballet leotard made me a sexy cat? No.
Re: S/O halloween costumes (UO...)
Firstly this bunny costume is f-ing adorable. But I don't think you'll get a kid 7-10 (which is what the other girls looked like) to wear it. Then you've got a Christmas Story situation.
Always Sunny's back b-tches!
Agreed.
It's not the worst costume I've seen but it's not appropriate either.
I totally get that. I guess I just didn't see it here. I saw leg warmers not knee highs (halloween's cold yo). But I get where others might think differently. The skirt I didn't see as different from all the tutus people put their DDs in for birthday parties. (FTR, I'm not putting DD in a tutu for her birthday.)

DH would flip his shiz if Emma came in and said she wanted one of those bunny costumes. She doesn't get a bikini either. DH wants the girls covered. I'm ok with that. Plus, how do I know that some man in a lawnchair on Halloween isn't checking out the pre-teen girls walking up to trick or treat.
It's amazing to me how slutty little girls costumes are now. Super mini skirts and corsets are not for children at all.
Eh, I don't think it's too bad. Would I wear a daughter of mine to wear it? Maybe, maybe not, but little girls wear tutus, short skirts, and leotards all the time. Especially for ballet, gymnastics, cheerleading. What's the difference with Halloween? I've seen much, much worse.
ETA:punctuation
I think there is a big difference between a toddler and these girls. A toddler in a tutu to me does not mean it's sexy, imo. To me it's just a poofy skirt.
When I made Emma's costume this year that was his only concern. How long will the dress be? Too the top of her feet DH, I don't make mini dresses for our daughters. If Isla was in a baby dress no one bats an eye, she's tiny, that's ok. If I put Emma in a dress that short I don't think it's appropriate.
Maybe that's my issue. I don't think a leotard is sexualizing a young girl...to the young girl. I think it's something that we as adults put on them and it's our issues not theirs. I don't want my DD to feel the need to watch herself to make sure she's not potentially being too sexy. I don't want her to even know what sexy is, and I'm afraid that telling her "no you can't wear that becasue it's inapporpriate" will bring that up. I will gladly, definitely, tell this to a thirteen-year-old, but I don't want to have to put that crap on a grade schooler. If she want's to wear a tutu and leg warmers (which I totally did when I was five for halloween), I'm all for it. I think there is a line, I just didn't think these costumes were it.
FWIW though, I did have my fun in college and if I had an adult halloween party to go to I would totes find a sexy costume to wear. Fun doesn't have to stop because I'm a mom. But alas, because I have never actually left my DD for the evening, I am staying home, wearing a sweatshirt with a pumpkin on it and handing out candy to the children. And I'll have fun doing that too.

Agree!
But apparently we're the only ones. DH just walked in and I showed him the pictures of the bunny costumes and asked if he would let DD wear them and he said "No! Too short!" I asked what if she wanted to be a ballarina and he asked if they made ballet dresses.

So there is a good chance this isn't going to make any sense once I write it out...
I do not think that these costumes are too slvtty, however they are NOT bunny costumes. Aside from the ears and I'm assuming a tail, there is nothing bunny about them. It looks more like little girls dressed up as (a watered down version) of the olders slvts who are dressed up as bunnies than little girls dressed up as bunnies.
In the case of a ballerina outfit, I think the difference is that the tutu and leotard is what ballerinas actually wear (but I would let a possible future DD wear that on Halloween)
That makes perfect sense and is basically what was in my head and I couldn't get out.
phew- it made sense in my head, but I also was having trouble getting it out.
I hate all these costumes that are like "oooh I'm a sexy ninja turtle"..I'm like "wait what? You don't even have a shell, a tight green dress and a sword does not make you a ninja turtle."
Yes, this!!
When I think bunny costume for young girl, I think this:
or even maybe this
where the skirt is longer
ETA- will some one pls tell me why my comp always PIPs twice?????
But wait, am I a sexy ninja turtle?
Yes, indeed! I like your shell.
I don't know why you pip twice though.
ILY.
The costumes now for teens compared to when I was a teen (just 10-11 years ago) are redic. I may have dressed more scandalous in my 20s but in HS it was more zombies and scary sh!t and so were all the girls no one could have confused for a pristitot. I think the leg warmer/knee high things just make it worse.
I get that maybe they look too much like watered down versions of the skimpy outfits that adults wear and that makes sense to me. I probably would stear my DD in a different direction that those outfits, but I wouldn't necessarily think "ohh that outfit it just too sexy, what awful parents" if I saw it on a trick-or-treater.
As far as the furry cat pats, I would like to say that I wore fishnets. Yes friends, fishnets. I only have this costume seared in my memory because there's a picture of me and my best friend (who is still my bf to this day) together on halloween that year in a frame on my desk. She's dressed as a princess in a long gown and I'm wearing a leotard and fishnets with cat ears and a mask. I never thought a thing of it until all this talk.

I think a little girl would see that costume and think it's just a cute bunny, but IMO it was made to look like a mini skirt with hooker boots and (the left one) a corset. I don't think young girls would make the connection to playboy, but adults looking at those girls for sure would. I actually dressed as a bunny one year, but the costume was a white hoodie, and included a tail and nose with whiskers.
FTR, I wouldn't let my daughter wear the costume on the left if it were a bumble bee, princess, harry potter, etc. The skirt/corset combo is not appropriate IMO.

Exactly! I'm not worried about my daughter (at that age) making the sexy connection. I'm worried about the adults and pervs down the street and answering the doors and handing out candy. It's scary enough with her dressed as innocently as possible I don't need to tramp her up.
I may be over protective etc etc , but it's a scary world out there with some nasty people. I'll do my best to protect her, if it can be something simple like not dressing her in some cheap trampy costume you better believe I'll do it. I also think it sets a precedent. Well mom 4 years ago, you let me dress with a skirt that short and knee highs, why can't I do it this year?
This is too far for me:
This is definitely crossing a line. Ick ick ick. She's wearing platform heels for crying out loud. So it isn't that I love sexy costumes, I just wouldn't catagorically dismiss a short skit because it's "too short." My DH, however, apparently would.
I saw a little girl wearing this costume yesterday and I thought it was adorable. She was not wearing the boots, she was wearing ballet flats. I do not like the boots in this picture, or the picture itself for that matter. But the costume was super cute IRL and at no point did I think she looked too sexy or like she was trying to be grown up. She was six and she looked like a candy corn witch. nothing more.
Always Sunny's back b-tches!
The top one is nasty, I think the bottom one is cute, it helps that the skirt covers her though. Maybe it's the black tights too, but it seems the skirt is considerably longer, she seems covered and not like a mini version of a skanky costume.
That first one *shudders*
I think the second one is cute, too. If it stopped after the orange ruffle, then it would be icky.
Well I feel better that the second costume seems to be thought of as cute. I brought it up because it had the same corset/frilly skirt combo that people were taking offense to on the bunny outfit. Maybe the black tights in the picture help, or the skirt is a little longer, but it was still well above her knees IRL.

I dunno, does your boy have breasts?
I personally would want my boy covered up, too, but yes, I think there is a difference between a girl going shirtless and a boy going shirtless. At least at the age of the girls posted in the pictures in this thread.
