1st Trimester

new to this and have some questions :)

Hey everybody, just got a BFP on Friday, we are so excited! This is our first, and I'm only about 4 weeks right now, but I have a couple questions. I'm wondering if anyone else was STARVING constantly during the first couple weeks of their pregnancy.....I'll eat a meal and be really hungry an hour later. My mom says it's all psychological, but I'm HUNGRY lol. Trying not to overeat too much and eating as healthy as I can. Also, I'm wondering if there are any types of household cleaners or anything to avoid when pregnant? Some thoughts would be wonderful!

Re: new to this and have some questions :)

  • If someone tried to tell me that my appetite was "psychological", their health would be in jeopardy if they're within arm's reach.  It's completely verified and common, as you'll read on here everyday.

I'd suggest getting a good book about pregnancy and digging in.

  • Hello and congrats on your pregnancy!

I've been starving the last 3 weeks and just a few days ago started eating more normal. In my case I think its because I'm a little on the too thin side and my body needed more fuel. I'm no expert but I think what you're experiencing is normal and not psychological.

Also, I wouldn't worry too much about over-eating. I've been concentrating on eating healthy and adding a bigger variety of fruits and veggies.

  • Congratulations! This is my 2nd and with the first I barely had an appetite bc M/S was all day for almost three months. But OMG....this one is totally different. If I am hungry and eat something light and hour later I am starving and if I don't eat right away I start feeling nauseous. I think my husband thinks it is all in my head because it wasn't the same with my first. But it is definitely not.
  • That is normal. I think one of the reasons I peed on a stick with my first was because I was STARVING all the time! It will calm down, so eat a little when you are hungry. Wear gloves if you are worried about the cleaners and keep it aired out. Also, dont scoop a cat box. Everything else should be fine when cleaning.

  • Yes, this can happen to some women.  And then there will be days, particularly if you get morning sickness, where you won't want to eat anything at all.  Trying not to overeat and trying to eat healthy is important, because you want to make sure you gain a healthy amount of weight during the pregnancy.
  • I was starving weeks 4-5. Personally, I decided that if I was hungry I would eat. I did try to eat healthier things like fruit, yogurt, etc. The hunger pretty much went away after week 5, then the m/s kicked in. I've only been able to eat a normal meal again the last few days.

  • Congrats! We found out on Friday as well.

I've noticed increased hunger on and off and am also trying to figure out whether it's psychological or real, but it sounds like enough people have the same experience that it's probably nothing to worry about too much as long as you're eating reasonably healthy stuff for those extra snacks/meals.

As far as chemicals, household cleaners are not really safe for you to be around at ANY time, pregnant or not. If you have to use them, make sure the area is reallly well ventilated, but you might want to think about going natural.
