1st Trimester

New to 1st Tri? Read before posting =)

Saw this was posted a while ago by beelove thought it should be posted again.

Hi, ladies!! Welcome to the 1st Trimester Board!! We are very excited for you to join the group and are so thrilled for your coming bundle of joy! For those of us who are here, 1st Tri can be a long process and as much as we love upping the number of posts we make, answering the SAME questions OVER and OVER can get really tiring and cause us to wish for 13 weeks, 3 days to come sooner than later for more reasons than one. So, these lovely ladies have put together a few FAQs for your benefit. Please read the list, which may grow through additional posts before posting. First, keep in mind, GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND. You can also learn a lot from these sites: www.babycenter.com www.americanpregnancy.org Now, on to the FAQ: Am I pregnant? Did you receive a BFP (big fat positive) on an HPT? Did your doctor do a blood test and find your HCG levels are above 5? If you answered YES to either of these questions, chances are, you are pregnant. CONGRATS! However, you may get a false positive if you are on pregnancy hormones or IVF. But you probably already know that. If you answered no, then YOU ARE NOT PREGNANT (yet). Feel free to test again tomorrow. Should I poas? If you have missed your period or if it's less than 5 days before your period and you think you might be PG, test away!! Just remember, you may be disappointed but remember until you get AF, you could still be PG. If you are asking this question, you probably shouldn't be on 1st Tri yet, but I'll let that slide. What kind of symptoms did you have early on? EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. Most of them are comparable to PMS...moodiness, sore breasts, tired, etc. If you have not missed your period yet, POAS, but there is no other way to tell if you are PG. And, some people have NO symptoms. Consider yourself lucky if you are one of those few! When does MS start? It is different for EVERYONE. The girls here range from 3 weeks to 8 weeks to 12 weeks. Some NEVER get it. Please do NOT complaing that you WANT m/s to "feel" pregnant. Be grateful to not have it. M/s SUCKS. And, it's very hard on the girls who have it. It could start ANYTIME. Can I have sex? YES, unless your doc advises against it. Many times in 1st tri, you may not feel like it, b/c you are sick, tired, etc. but you can have it. You will not hurt the baby. There is NO way your partner's penis will hit the baby. Sometimes, sex is even BETTER during pregnancy. I say, take advantage of that! You may experience cramping after sex...this is normal. Try not to be too concerned but if you have bleeding/spotting, definitely call your doc. :) Am I showing? Most likely NOT in 1st Tri, unless you have multiples or it is your 2nd/3rd child. It is bloat, weight gain, etc. that causes you to put on a bit of extra in your mid-section. No, sticking it out doesn't change our minds about this. You will not show until 14-20 weeks and maybe even later than that. Everyone is different but there is nothing to "show" until 2nd Tri. When did you buy maternity clothes? You can start whenever you want, but also consider that your body is going through a lot of changes. Most people buy them at 12-15 weeks and of course, throughout your pregnancy but again, it depends on you, what you are comfortable wearing now, etc. Also, consider the bella band. Many girls have found much success with it and it makes their current clothes last longer. What is a Bella Band? https://www.ingridandisabel.com/ When was your 1st Appt? MOST people see their doc between 8-12 weeks. This is typical unless you have had a previous miscarriage or on IVF. So, while it seems like a long time, it is normal. We know it's hard to be patient. We've all been there. When was your 1st ultrasound? MOST people get them done between 8-12 weeks at their first appt., but some people don't have them done until 20 weeks. Every doctor is different. You'll have to ask yours what is standard in their practice. This also may have to do with your insurance and what is covered. I got a BFP, what should I do? Call your doctor. How much can I lift? 25 lbs. is usually what most docs say but it could be different for you depending on if you have back pain or other issues. I have some spotting/bleeding, what should I do? Please call your doc ASAP. We are all very cautious when it comes to this and no matter how many successful spotting stories we have, there are just as many losses. It is always better to be safe than sorry. Everyone's bleeding is different from color to amount to what week it happened, and we support you and will be here if you need us to send vibes, but there is no way for us to know what your bleeding means, so call your doc and keep us updated! When did you start taking Prenatal vitamins? As soon as I found out I was PG or even before. There are a variety out there. Everyone does different things b/c some prenatals make us sick. You can get a script from your doc or buy them over the counter. You may opt to take Flintstones. Whatever you are doing, it is important to take them, so start now! What is considered the END of 1st Tri? 13 weeks, 3 day according to the lovely ladies of the Bump, but: There are basically three ways of dividing up a pregnancy into the three trimesters; they are by: Development, Gestation, Conception. They give different dates for when the second trimester begins and for when the third trimester begins. Your health care provider might prefer to use the Development method, while another Midwife or Doctor may use the Gestation method. I am sure they do that just to confuse pregnant women. Development: This uses actual developmental stages to divide up a pregnancy. From LMP to 12 weeks the embryo develops all the major organs and becomes a fetus. From 12 weeks to 27 weeks the fetus continues developing and reaches viability. From 27 weeks on the fetus finishes development and prepares for delivery. Here the second trimester begins at 12w 0d and the third at 27w 0d. Gestation: With this method you take the 40 weeks of gestation and divide by three. Here the second trimester begins at 13w 3d and the third at 26w 6d. Conception: This method is where you take the 38 weeks of post conception development, divide by three, and add two weeks. Here the second trimester begins at 14w 5d and the third at 27w 3d. What books do you recommend? What to Expect When You Are Expecting, Expectant Father, Girlfriend's Guide to Pregnancy, Pregnancy Sucks (for men), Baby Bargains Is there lotion to avoid stretch marks? NO, you cannot avoid stretch marks no matter what the bottles of lotion say. It is genetic; however, using moisturizers can assist with the itching. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- OK, I know I missed some, so ladies, feel free to post more in the comments section. Hopefully this will help anyone who is new to the board get your footing. I don't have codes or websites for tickers here b/c I think that is separate but for anyone who has that info, feel free to plug it in this post as well. I hope this is helpful to the new girls. I know that you all have tons of questions, as I did as well. Lurking for a few days may also help with many of your questions as things get asked often. While we want to be helpful, repeating the same answers does get out of hand and since the search feature on The Bump sucks, this will at least be a partial one stop shop for some of your questions. Have a good day and congrats on your pregnancy!! Here's to a H&H 9 months!
