another what to wear in the hospital question

After reading the post about what to wear during birth/hospital stay, I was wondering about panties.

Do you plan on wearing the ones the hospital gives you or bring your own? What about after you get home, are you buying cheap underwear to wear for those first bloody weeks? What about pads, buy some or use the hopital huge ones?

Re: another what to wear in the hospital question

  • Everyone I have talked to said wear those mesh undies they give you, because they will be destroyed and they are comfy. So I figure I will go with that. At home, I plan to have some old undies on hand that I don't mind if they have to be thrown away. I am going to buy some maxis, too. I will use the hospital ones until I run out, but I figure it's good to have some on hand. Never know how much (or little) you will end up bleeding.

  • I'm planning on wearing the mesh panties they give you.  I don't want to ruin mine.  I am going to bring my own pads for the second day though.  The ones our hospital carries are just so bulky and uncomfortable.

  • I'll bring a few old pairs, but if the mesh ones are comfy, I'll stick with those.

There's nothing worse than uncomfortable undies!

  • I liked the mesh ones until it was time to go home - so I bought a 3 pack of some cheapies from Target in dark colors just in case, and wore the pads the hospital gave me until my bleeding lessened.  I didn't gush or bleed substantially by any means.  I was wearing regular pads within about 3 days if I remember correctly - and I just bought Always pads I think.  Within about two weeks or so I was able to wear panti-liners with no issues although I did buy the long ones that offered more coverage without being thick like pads.  I stopped bleeding by about 3 or so weeks though I think so I wore just the cheapie panties while it was the worst and then my regular panties after that.

So I would buy pads for at home - the hospital won't give you enough to last the entire time, and take a few in your hospital bag in case you don't like what the hospital provides - same with panties too.  But I wouldn't take a bunch just in case you do like the hospital ones.

  • Yeah I wear the hospital underwear that they provide.  Am I the only one who had to wear icepack pads?
  • LOVED the icepack pads!!  I brought lots of those home along with the mesh.  I also recommend flushable wipes for the hospital and home.  Toilet paper=ouch!
  • The mesh undies are amazing!! The nurses gave me a ton to take home, which I greatly appreciated.

I wore the hospital gowns they gave me, but I think it was the next day sometime (I honestly had almost no sense of time when I was there) I was able to wear my own clothes. It felt like heaven to wear yoga pants and a t-shirt!

Yes - I wanted bottoms on so bad!  And H and I went and walked the hospital while DS was in the nursery once so I could get out of the room for a bit - was the only time I sent him to the nursery but we couldn't walk around with him so we went and got a keepsake bear from the hospital gift shop and just was great to stretch my legs a bit!  Glad I had pants to wear for that lol

  • We had LOTS  of visitors in the hospital the same day he was born (again, I think) and I hated it! I was still super loopy from all the drugs from my emergency c/s, I was trying to get the hang of breastfeeding, still wearing a gown, etc...

I don't mind close family, but DH's two BFFs will not being joining us in the hospital day 1 this time. Everyone can wait until I can wear pants, lol.

  • I wore the mesh ones for about a week after delivery!

  • The mesh panties at the hospital where I had Samantha were more like fishnet than mesh and they were really uncomfortable for me. My big booty was poking through the holes and I asked the nurse as soon as I was able when I could wear my own panties.

This time I'll be delivering at a hospital that's the same hospital system as the hospital where I work and I know  the mesh panties we have at my hospital are a really fine mesh, so maybe my big ole' butt will be happier in those. I'm still going to bring my own panties just in case. I'll also bring my own pads even though the hospital will provide those.

  • I completely recommend to use what the hospital gives you for the first few days. It wasn't so much that the panties got ruined, but I was wearing two pads basically, and my regular underwear wouldn't fit with all that extra bulk. I definitely felt more secure wearing the hospital pads the first few days. After that, the extra absorpency thin pads were okay, once the bleeding wasn't super, super heavy.

  • Yeah my hospital doesn't provide pads or underwear so nobody I know has ever worn anything but their own underwear or depends and nobody has had problems with staining either, so I honestly don't get it.  I personally wore depends so I wouldn't have to worry about leaking, but by the time we went home (day #3) I was wearing my own underwear and regular pads with no issues.  I never used ice pads or anything down there other then the peri bottle when I went to the washroom either.

  • I have never seen the mesh panties but have heard so many wonderful things about them here. To me though, they are like a unicorn.  I'll probably wear my own due to lack of mesh panties but last time I think I maybe tossed 1 pair and the pads were fine to keep the rest clean.

One thing I will say is that if your hospital does not provide pads (mine gave me some immediately after but then it was expected I use my own) make sure you bring something more heavy duty than your run of the mill always or kotex. I plan on buying some incontinence type pads for the first 12 hours or so because normal pads intended for a period won't cut it.

  • I used the hospital's mesh undies. I also asked for a few pair to take home along with some of the thicker pades. I used the hospital pads for overnight, and Always Overnight, I think, during the day.
