Nanny - paying on the books

I just found out that I can't get into either of the two daycares I've been on the waiting list for since finding out I was pregnant.  At this point, I think that we're going to have to hire a nanny at least until we can get into one of the good centers in my town.

I've been given the contact information for three services that are local, but none of them take a stance on paying the nannies on the books.

I will only hire a nanny that is willing to be paid legally, for numerous reasons, including my profession, so my question is for those of you that do pay on the books, how did you approach the issue when interviewing nannies.

I assume it needs to be brought up in interviews because so many people don't pay legally some nannies may assume they're going to be paid under the table.

Did you have to pay a higher rate in order to find a nanny?

  • Yes, say it upfront.  There are a few nannies that prefer on the books. Find one of those.

  • I just asked in the interview or even later. Our nanny wanted it on the books because of the profession she wants to go into and with the tax deduction the amount we end up paying is pretty much the same as 'off the books'. They shouldn't have anything against it and you shouldn't have to pay more hourly. I can recommend 4nannytaxes with their tax calculators, we used those.

We mentioned it at the interview.

FYI, if you didn't know, don't forget to pay unemployment insurance.  We did everything right and didn't do that.  Embarrassed  Totally not intentional.

So when the nanny we fired for poor performance filed for unemployment, we realized our mistake and will have to pay insurance for the last year plus penalties.  Still waiting to find out how bad the penalties are and whether the nanny will be awarded unemployment (she shouldn't, but who knows).

Don't you hate that you try to do things correctly and just get penalized, especially if you're like me and everyone you know pays under the table.
