Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Baby carrier

Hi - I used to post on the July 2011 board until Iit got weird and people left for a facebook page.  Sorry to "crash" this board but I need opinions on baby carriers.

I made a rushed decision to purchase an Ergo Sport because it was on sale.  The deal was that you cannot return it though!  Anyway, the carrier may work better later on I suppose...but for now, my LO doesn't want his legs in the butterfly position and the Ergo holes are sooooo far apart it's like his legs are sticking straight out to the sides.

I am thinking of consigning the stupid thing and picking up a different one...perhaps one that allows his legs to dangle more.  I am not interested in simple slings as LO only likes to be either on my chest /shoulder or in a football hold facing out.  He despises being cradled or on his back (thus the car seat and stroller are torture, I rarely go anywhere alone).  Funny...don't babies usually sleep in the car!!!???  Thank goodness these are the biggest issues we are dealing with but, dang!

Any raving reviews on carriers?

Re: Baby carrier

  • Beco Gemini.  Baby can face out which he might enjoy.

It also has adjustable settings where baby's legs go to accommodate younger babies (i.e. it's narrower for a little baby).

  • Crotch-danglers aren't better for baby, they're much worse. Having the legs up is good for hip development. Hanging by the crotch is uncomfortable and not really healthy for longer periods.

I really like my Ergo, but I also like my mei-tai which is easier to do a hip carry or back carry in. My cheapo seven sling is good for a hip carry on the go.

  • How old is your LO?  O felt like my LO couldn't straddle me either in the ergo but if you sit his butt farther down than his legs, it works and my LO will fall asleep in it. It took a few tries to get him to sit like that. I now use it a lot and love it. I literally bought almost every type of carriers out there. The ones I use are the ergo, mei tai and baby k'tan.

  • roll up a receiving blanket and stick it under his tush. I do this with my little one and he loves the ergo. Also don't sell it, it is amazing when they are older.

My life has a superb cast but I can't figure out the plot.
  • We have the Baby Bjorn and love it. I also like the option to face out when LO is old enough. It's comfortable for me and comfortable for DD. I've been very pleased with it.
  • We went through about 3-4 weeks where M hated her Ergo for the same reason.  Once she got over the awkward stage and her legs fit more comfortably through the holes she liked it again.  I would give it a couple weeks- she may be in it again quicker than you think!  And I have the Ergo Sport as well.

  • Did you pick up an ergo heart 2 heart newborn insert, too? If not you may want to try one. My LO is 4 months old and still prefers her ergo rides with the insert best. Basically baby's bum sits on the insert, making room for their legs to "dangle" straight down. For me it ends up similating how she would sit if I were holding her directly. I tried the rolled up blanket as pp suggests a few weeks ago, but for us the insert was still best.
