Food Allergy

2 weeks, still blood in poo...

I had to get DS's flu shot yesterday at the pedi's office so I took in a poopy diaper from my 7 week old DD for them to recheck since I've been completely dairy and soy free for 2 whole weeks (wow - so hard!).  The nurses checked it, and sure enough...came back positive.  :( So, now what?  I have an appt for Monday with the pedi, but I am hoping some of you might have advice!  I was really counting on Alimentum to be used soon since I go back to work and this diet is taking its toll on my supply (trying to pump so she can get used to the bottle while I'm at work)...but I'm afraid it's going to make her worse than what we are already managing since she still has blood in her poo and I've been dairy / soy free!

I've only been eatingplain jane oatmeal (the ingredients say: OATS and that's it!), meats, and fruit.  Granted, I have lost 12 pounds in two weeks, but my gosh - I don't know how much longer I can keep this up and I just want her to feel better. We have seen SOME improvement, but she still gets incredibly irritable through some bottles and as well during her sleep.

any advice?

  • It took DS to stop having bloody diapers. I remember the first few weeks were it felt like you only ate the same 3 things. Look up recipes online. There are a lot alternatives to many things. The earth balance dairy/soy free butter has made life much easier. Hang in there.

  • It took at least 3 weeks for us to not see blood in DS' poo once I cut all dairy and soy.  There is hidden soy and dairy in everything it seems =(  IT sucks but it takes awhile for their gut to heal.  We are in week 4 and he still has good and bad diapers (although no visible blood).  I wouldn't think it automatically means alimentum won't work for your LO.  I think you'll have to just try it and see what happens.  I'd keep pumping in the meantime just in case she doesn't have a good reaction to it.

I totally feel for you - this diet sucks so bad.  I am hungry 99% of the time.  It is getting easier the longer I am on it because I am finding more things to eat but it still sucks.  Eating out is impossible.  I stare at my pantry shelves and there is not a thing I can eat in there.  Whole Foods has been my saving grace.  They seem to have a dairy free/soy free option for a lot of things.  Largely though, I am relying on meat, veggies and fruit (and oatmeal like you!).  I did discover that Rice Krispies and Vanilla Almond milk are good when I get tired of oatmeal.

My milk supply seems to be down too and I know its b.c its hard to get enough calories on this diet.  I hope my DS can tolerate alimentum as well because I go back to work in a week and I am not sure I will be able to pump enough for him and honestly I'm so sick of this diet too.  I am hoping to BF till at least six months (my original goal was 8 before this diet), but we will have to see how it goes.

Keep us updated on how your LO is doing and how the alimentum goes.  GL!

  • Hey, I am right there with ya!  I am two months off dairy and two weeks off soy...it is hard.  Check out this site:

    www.mspimamma.blogspot.com

she has so many great recipes....there is a really super simple beer bread recipe (because it seems ALL bread products have soy) brownies, cakes, yummy food.  It is really a great resource.  I also tend to get a lot of calories from potato chips!!  Embarrassed They don't have soy!  (at least some brands).

    Hang in there!  Good luck.

  • I would give it a little longer. As others mentioned, it can take 3+ weeks to see improvement. I've been dairy, soy, egg, nut and wheat free for nearly 2 weeks and I started seeing improvement a few days ago but the diapers are not looking as good today. It's frustrating!

Hang in there... and try to snack on some high-calorie foods. I've been eating a lot of avocados, hummus, putting olive oil on everything, Enjoy Life chocolate chips and cookies, kettle corn (surprisingly high calorie!), coconut milk ice cream and yogurt, potato chips, Earth Balance fake butter, etc. I've been losing weight but not as rapidly.

  • Check out gluten free products. I am eating all my daughters foods since so many that are gluten free are also dairy free. Her breads are!

  • Ditto what everyone else said about giving it more time - it took about 3 weeks for DD's diapers to clear up, and it was super stressful waiting it out.  Hang in there and hopefully you'll be on the other side soon!

  • it may take more than two weeks to clear your system from all dairy/soy.

Also, some meats have dairy in it.. are you checking the ingredients from even meats? also, are you avoiding casein and whey?
