I was fully healed by 6 weeks. Pain was minimal about where you are, but I still waited the FULL six weeks (and then some) before any naughty business Itchiness usually happens when you are healing so that's probably a good sign!
I am a runner, knitter, scientist, DE-IVF veteran, and stage III colon cancer survivor.
I had a severe 3rd degree w/ my twins. The PP nurse told me you can usually expect a week of recovery for each degree of tear. I would say 3 weeks is about when I could sit & walk normally. I had a lot of swelling, though, and also re-fractured my tailbone, so I think that added to my pain. I know how scary it is, and thinking that things will never be the same. But, they will. I was on 800mg ibuprofen for a really long time (can't tolerate narcotic pain meds, which made things worse). I would say around 6 wks is when I started to feel a lot better. And yes, totally normal for the stitches to itch. I used the witch hazel pads for a long time, too, and those helped. Hang in there....I know it's tough. Congrats on your LO!

Yay! That gives me hope. I see you're a runner...I am too...when did you feel good enough to run? I'm dying to lace up my shoes!

haha - I ran a half marathon when I was pregnant (well, ran and walked it) and was SO sure I'd be ready for another when Sam was 6 months old.
Um, no.
It was so, so hard to carve out time to exercise period, between work and kiddo, and nursing made it much, much harder. Logistically it was just tough. So honestly... not until I weaned around 13 months. I kind of suck that way Many, many moms on the Nest Health and Fitness board do a LOT better than I did so I'd ask them

I can only imagine how hard it will be to carve out some running time. Amazing that you ran a half while preg though!!

I had a 4th degree tear and it took me the better part of 10-12 weeks to feel better. By about 7 weeks, I could tell I was finally on the road to recovery. I also tried to push it a little too hard in the beginning and ended up tearing a stitch. Everyone heals in different times- so make sure you listen to your body.
There were definitely days where I was not sure if I was going to be back to my old self. However, by about 4-5 months, I was about back to normal. I am finally finding time to get back to running. I was able to get on a treadmill and walk slowly since about 12-14 weeks post-partum.
Good luck and take it easy. And like a pp said, itching is a sign of healing.
DS #1: (Summer 2010) Gonal-F, Ovidrel, Endometrin & B2B IUIs (Hail Mary Cycle)
DC #2&3: IVF #1 (November 2011)
The pain subsided for me after about 3 weeks, and by my 6 week postpartum appointment, I was finally starting to feel more like my old self. At that point, I still had some tenderness and numbness in certain areas, but it was a HUGE improvement compared to how I felt in the beginning. Did they give you a sitz bath to take home from the hospital? When I made it a priority to take time for at least one a day, it made such a difference for me.
Honestly it was after 6the weeks. I had a 9 lb 10 oz baby with a 3rd degree tear and an episiotomy so that may have complicated things but I was not "released" by my ob until 8.5 weeks and that is probably about the time I consistently felt better.

I don't remember the timing of everything, but I know it did the sitz baths every day and used any of the gadgets they sent me home with probably for the first month. I also took the Colace pills daily for at least that time. Good luck and congrats on your new baby!
Unexplained. IVF#2 worked! Beta at 10dp6dt = 154, Beta at 13dp6dt = 603
I had a 3rd degree episiotomy and I think it took the full 6 weeks to feel close to normal. It wasnt necessarily painful the whole time but maybe just uncomfortable.
Once the stitches are out it makes a big difference. Are yours disolvable?
4th degree here.... i was in pain for a good 8 weeks +.... and still have issues with my tear/healing (or lack of) that requires surgery that i'll have next year (when the twins are 3 and don't need to be picked up all the time).
it sucks. pm me if you need to vent.
I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.
I had a 4th degree tear and was in serious pain (taking Percocet) for up to a month. I ended up with a rectovaginal fistula that couldn't be repaired until 13 weeks postpartum, so I dealt with the grossness of that for 3 months. I think some of these tears are worse than C-section incisions, but no one ever tells you that. Take it easy...everyone told me after a vaginal delivery, I should feel great - that I should be able to be up and around in a week. I wondered why I still felt like sh*t for so long..until I Googled what actually happened to me.

Also, go to Target and buy them out of Dibucain cream (put it on your pad). It saved my life in terms of itchiness.

I had a 4th degree tear, and it's not painful anymore but it can be uncomfortable at times and yes, it does get itchy...but presumably that's because it's healing. Like other people said, the squirt bottle is just heavenly!! Who think something so simple would work, but it's so relieving!! I love it!
A few of my friends with bad tears/episiotomies said it took about 4 weeks post delivery to feel 'normal' again...

Re: 3rd degree tear ladies...
I love your DD's name!
I didn't tear but my SIL took the full 6 weeks to feel better. She was pretty tender for awhile.
Do you have the little squirt bottle for when you pee? That made me feel wayyy better.
Thanks! I use the squirt bottle every morning and it feels like heaven!
