Helping with chores.

I was raised that when it came to chores, everyone pitched in. I have DD help with a few things around the house, but I'd like to hear what other jobs a 3 year old might be able to help with.

Re: Helping with chores.

  • My DD helps pick up her toys and helps put away her clothes.  I hang everything up but she puts away her socks, underwear and pajamas in her drawers.

  • My daughter is 2 and she helps load and unload the dishwasher, picks up clothes & shoes and puts them away, puts away her toys, cleans the table, clears the dishes, she also picks up trash, feeds the dog, and kind of helps make the bed, she is also getting very helpful with the laundry.

  • DD doesn't have any assigned chores, but generally she's expected to clear her own plate/cup and trash, help with feeding the cat and she puts away her clothes and laundry. Helps me load/unload the dishwasher, fetch/deliver things for me and help clean up. She loves to help so I want to encourage it as much as possible

  • -take their dishes to the counter after eating-  putting napkins away (I use wash cloths for napkins, and old diapers for cleaning counters/floorts)- My nearly 4 yo for sometime has put her clothes in their drawers- at night I have a clean up chart and they each are assigned to clean up 2 of the following-vehicles, clothes/shoes, dolls, art stuff, books, paper/trash.  They LOVE this- I flip on every light in the house, blast music and we run to look at our first chore, and race to see who can finish fastest, then help eachother, then we race to the chart and see our second, eetc.  Then we go on a hunt for ANYTHING on the floor.

My mommy friends think I make them too many chores, but the way I see it, the only expected chore is clean up.  Everything else is just practicing helpful habits- things we all do all the time out of habit because it's just how it's done- like please and thank you.

  • DD takes her dishes to the sink after she's done eating. She cleans up her toys (not always willingly, lol), puts some of her clothes away, like her undies and pj's. We're starting to have her help with the dishwasher (but honestly, it's easier for me to wash the dishes by hand after we're done eating, so we don't use the dishwasher that often). When we move into our new house where we have side loading washing machine/dryer, I'll have her help me with laundry as well. She likes to set the table at dinner. In the summer, she also likes to help me water our plants.
She really just likes to help, so it's pretty easy to get her to do "chores" (except picking up her toys, that's sometimes a struggle)
  • DD puts her clothes in the hamper, puts her pullup and other things in the trash, picks up toys. She also has a broom and dust pan and she play sweeps while I sweep, I also give her a cloth and let her help dust while I am dusting. Hope she still thinks chores are this much fun at 12 or 13!!
