Babies: 6 - 9 Months

best feeding supplies

Hi,

I'm lurking from 3-6...my son is 4 1/2 months and i'm planning ahead for starting solids.  There are so many spoons, bowls etc out there its hard to know the difference and which ones are the best.  Can you recommend some that you've used and loved/hated more than others?

Re: best feeding supplies

  • I HATED the Avent spoons.  Horrible.  They may have been okay in the very beginning, but now the spoon portion is way too small and it's very thick, as in too big for MY hand to hold!  I like these cheapy Munchkin ones becuase the handle is long and the spoon is generous sized, and the soft bite Gerber for when we were just starting out.  Get 6-10 spoons, it seems like they are always in the dishwasher.  I'm really bad about getting him a new spoon for his "dessert." TBH, I just normally feed him out of the jar/container and don't bother with bowls or anything.  An older lady I know made a suggestion to use a coffee mug for cereals and that has worked amazingly well, with the handle and all.  We do have some cheapy Parents Choice bowls with lids and they are great for storing half of jarred food when I know he won't eat it all.  I also have a boon divider plate that "sticks" to his high chair (a boon flair) that is great, but again, we don't use it. I don't plan on buying any more bowls until he is self-feeding.

  • We just use the small tupperware pieces for bowls.  It's worked great for us.

  • I bought a 3 pack of those hot/cold colour changing spoons, and no bowls or anything I use a mug. When DD is older ill buy bowls but its not needed now.

  • A mug is a great idea.  I bought little plastic bowls but went back to a regular ceramic one because stays put when I only have one free hand to feed him with.  The plastic ones were light and moved all over if I didn't hold them still.  I second the munchkin brand spoons.

  • We also use the Munchkin spoons and really like them.

I make a good bit of DD's food and have to send it in with her to daycare, so I use these bowls and lids. We also have the sippy cups. They're cheap, and if daycare loses one, it's not a big deal. If I'm using store-bought food, though, I just feed her out of the jar. She always finishes it, so I don't worry about leftovers.

  • We use Nuk spoons. They are just the right size for her little mouth... I think i bought a 6 pack of nuk bowls too becasue they were hanging together..lol.
