BLW + Purees?

Is it completely contradictory to do BLW but also do some purees?  Anyone doing both?  I feel like I need purees as a stepping stone before going straight to little pieces of solid food.  Although I understand there is less chance of choking with BLW because they learn to move food around with their tongue, etc.

6 months is right around the corner and I am avoiding the inevitable - I have no plan!

Re: BLW + Purees?

  • We are planning on doing both (sorta).  We have been doing purees for about 6 weeks and will be introducing some solids in a few weeks. I am not going to be giving LO whatever we eat, simply because he has a sensitive stomach and we usually eat a lot of spicy/heavily seasoned recipes; however, I will be giving him steamed veggies, toast and soft fruits so he can get the hang of eating on his own.

  • To me, doing both is the worst of both worlds. All the work, taking away from the benefits of either. So we'll be sticking to BLW as outlined in the book, most likely.
  • I think we will do a mix of both.

That's what I was thinking - but I thought I read on one BLW site something about a combination approach.  Just thinking about it more, it seemed like they would contradict each other.

Seriously, I feel like everything I read these days just mushes together with all this other information rolling around in my head.  The combination approach could very well have been a dream.  Or hallucination.

    Wait....where am I??

  • It's not like a combo will break the baby or anything. I just think it sounds like a lot more work - you have to make/buy the purees, feed those, AND put up with the mess of BLW and making baby-friendly foods. We started BLW today... but I don't think he ate anything. He enjoyed mushing up his egg yolk, sucking on an apple slice, and mushing up a steamed baby carrot. He did at least taste those things today. He also made quite a mess. I need to get a splat mat.

  • I am doing both in a way.  He completely feeds himself, but since he is so good with a spoon I will probably do some cereal but let him feed himself with preloaded spoons.  I didn't plan on cereal at all, but he isn't gaining weight great and I feel it could help his reflux.

I might also make purees and use it as a jelly type spread on hard toast.  That way he is getting more nutrients if he still isn't as efficient eater in a month or so.

But honestly, he has done awesome today and yday with avocado and rice cereal.

  • IIRC in the book she mentions that purees are OK as long as you are only giving them loaded spoons, not directly putting it in their mouth. I think the point is to let the kid explore the food.

We did purees with #1 and I can't tell you how much more I like doing BLW (with #2). It is actually kind of fun. The gagging can suck but Jack gagged a lot with purees so I am sure she would too.
