TTC After a Loss

What was your natural m/c like?

This is my 2nd loss, but my first one was at 9 weeks, and had a d&c, so I never had to go through any of an actual natural m/c.

On Tuesday, our ultrasound showed a very abnormal u/s and no heartbeat at 6 weeks. So I stopped the progesterone, and my dr. said I'd probably start bleeding. I go in for a follow-up Tuesday.

I didn't really have anything happen until yesterday morning, I passed a 1/2 dollar coin size clot, and it was grey. It was not accompanied by blood, but it was solid/spongey so I don't know what it was.

Then in the afternoon, I finally had some heavy bleeding, but it didn't last too long. Then today I have had a little bit, but not too much. Sometimes it's red, and sometimes is dark grayish in color (?).

However, I have been EXTREMELY nauseous. It comes and goes, but when it comes, it's awful and sticks around for a good while. Is this normal in miscarriages? I assume my hormones are all over the place.

How long did everything take to finally pass? I also have some cramps off and on, but not as frequent as this stupid nausea. I just want it to be over.

Anyone use a pill to help it along? Did it cause any side-effects? I was going to talk to my dr. about it on Tuesday.

Thanks for sharing your experience!

Re: What was your natural m/c like?

  •  I am really sorry for your loss :o(

My natural m/c was at 12 weeks 6 days. I don't mind talking about it but it's kind of a graphic story so you may not really want to read it.

I had a tiny bit of spotting in the morning of 9/25 but nothing significant. Around 2 in the afternoon I started to have cramps/contractions that I will say felt almost as bad as labor. After 2 hours of that I had a strong pressure like I had to use the bathroom so I went into the bathroom and sat on the toilet. About 30 seconds later I felt something come out of me and then the cramping/contractions stopped completely. I got up and looked into the toilet and was surprised to see that everything had come out as a unit since I had been told to expect lots of clots but that we wouldn't see the baby. The placenta was attached to the amniotic sac which was intact and the baby was floating around in amniotic fluid. I did get that all out of the toilet because even if I had wanted to flush, which I never could have after seeing the baby in there, I wouldn't have been able to, it was too big.

  • I am so sorry for your loss.  I had a m/c at 11w6d.  Like others said, mine was very painful as well.  I had severe cramps that were more like contractions.  They would take my breath away, and I would have to stop and grab something to brace myself.  Then they would go away for a bit.  Sometimes before I would pass something, they would be awful.  There was a serious amount of bleeding and I went through a lot of pads b/c clots and things would come out and kind of lay on top of the pad so I changed it immediately.  FWIW, I found Always Infinity to be the best and most comfortable pad (and I generally HATE pads).

I also felt very nauseous and stayed with me for a week or two (can't remember exactly).  It's from the rapid changes in hormones.

I don't know how long I would have bled b/c I started m/c naturally the day before my scheduled D&C and I went ahead w/ that b/c I needed it all to be over.

I hope this is quick for you.  Big (((HUGS)))

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

My pregnancy stopped at around 5w and I officially miscarried it at 7.5w.  The tissue itself came out in my pad and was about the size of a silver dollar when it came out.  I had to take it into my doc for pathology and when I placed it in the container, stretched out, it was about two, maybe three inches long, gray w/ some pinky flesh colored tissues.  I didn't touch it, I couldn't, but it seemed somewhat solid and spongy.  What you passed may have been the tissue.  Since your body either has or is taken care of it already, the only reason you should need to take a pill (most seem to take a drug called Cytotec) is if the doc doesn't think everything came out.  My doc did an ultrasound the day after and my uterus looked clear and my HCG levels are dropping rapidly, which is a sign that nothing was retained.  I did pass a few more smaller globs of tissue through the next day.  As far as pain goes, it was pretty bad.  Everyone said it will feel like a bad period, but I'd say it was much worse than that and I handle pain pretty well.  I continued to have cramps through the next couple of days.  I spotted and bled for a grand total of two weeks (1 week before I actually miscarried and one week after).

  • I had my mc two weeks ago. It started Friday night and last until the following thursday. After that it was just spotting. I had some nausea at night but by the time I was spotting that was over. I would say it was like my period but longer. My cramps weren't any worse than AF cramps, and the bleeding wasn't heavier either. The clots that I passed were a lot bigger than normal. I hope you get through this process quickly!

Yes, I second her thank you. Seeing it was over within a couple of weeks makes me feel a little better. I was scared it'd take 3-4 (I don't know where I got that from).

Hippo, hope it is 'gentle' as it can be for both of us.

  • I am very sorry you are going through this.  I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.  I hope you have a quick and painless m/c and I will keep you and your family in my T&P.

I was working out when I started m/c...I felt a gush and then ran to the bathroom and noticed I was bleeding.  I had some AF-like cramps the first day, but a day or two later, I passed the sac and those were labor-like cramps.  I want to say I bled heavily for about 3 days, and then medium to light for another week and a half after that.  I think like PP said, the nausea is caused by the hormone changes. I m/c at 9w6d, but had a BO, so I didnt see anything in my huge clot ( i had a lot of smaller clots before and after the big one)

  • Mine was at 6.5 weeks & relatively painless. I started spotting off & on on a Tuesday afternoon and on into Wednesday. Around 6PM I started having AF-like cramps. When I used the restroom around 6:30PM I was bleeding similar to a heavy AF type flow. The next time I used the restroom that night, the baby came out. It was bloody & very small, so if I didn't look for it I could have easily missed it.

  • (siggy warning)

I'm so sorry for your loss.

My first m/c was easy, physically. I had minimal cramping and minor spotting. I passed a tiny bit of tissue but nothing recognizable.

My second was horrifically painful, worse than l&d by far, and I passed lots of thick clots and finally ended up in the ER due to the pain. I didn't see anything more than clots and blood come out- they removed the rest manually.

My third was in between, pain-wise. It was like a bad period. I was taking lots of tylenol/ibruprofren to offset the pain though so that probably helped. I passed the baby standing in line to pay for something. I was able to remove it in teh car and bring it in for testing. It was recognizable to me.

I don't really remember much gray tissue though? I do remember a little bit of nausea though. Really, everyone is different and every m/c is different- I'm proof of that. I hope you are able to get some answers and closure during this difficult time. HUGS.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

My natural m/c started with spotting at 5 weeks that lasted a week.  At 6 weeks it was heavier and I went to the ER (it was a weekend).  Ultrasound showed just a sac and HCG was around 150 I think.  I went home and bled like a period.  The next day I had slight cramping and bleeding, passed some tissue that I guess was the sac/placenta.  Cramps eased up but I bled for about a week and it tapered off.  I never had nausea with the m/c and didn't need any other medications to help.  I hope you feel better soon.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

I had a natural mc at 11.5 weeks. I had extremely heavy bleeding and passing of tissue that lasted fora few hours on two separate occasions that were two days apart. Each time I also had very intense cramping that came in waves like contractions. And bleeding that rushed at such a rate that I couldn't possibly absorb it with any number of pads. I came very close to losing consciousness from the blood loss once and needed IV saline. Also became very anemic and iron supplements were recommended.

I did take misoprostol but I think that by the time I took it all the tissue had already passed. I took percocet at the same time. The combo of those two drugs made me incredibly dizzy and woozy. I couldn't sit up fit several hours. I felt fatigued and very mentally unfocused.

Bleeding lasted for almost 3 weeks from when I started spotting, tapering off gradually.

If you are having intense pain or for your nausea ask your doc for some meds that can help.

My docs told me to return to the hospital if ever I was in extreme pain or bleeding through more than 2 pads an hour.

I wish you a quick recovery from this. So sorry you have to go through it.

  • So sorry for all of you.

My first was extremely painful at the end.  I had contraction like moments of intense pain for a while, and then it just became solid pain.  I was in the tub, got up to tell my hubby I needed to go to the hospital and felt a gush.  On the floor was a grey mass, and the pain was gone.  I bled for about three weeks.

My cp was like a heavy period, but not very painful.

With my third, I knew what was coming, and I knew it was going to be bad because I was further along than the first.  (The baby wasn't bigger but the placenta was)  I headed to the er as soon as I started to bleed.  They put me on some painkillers and I tried to sleep during the night, my D&C was scheduled for the next morning.  At about 5 am the pain became so intense I had to call my husband who was asleep in our car because I literally couldn't move, shout out to the nurse or anything.  Could only reach my phone.  They dosed me up again and it didn't even touch the pain.  So I walked to the bathroom when I felt a ton of pressure and it was almost like my water broke, a ton of liquid came gushing out.  So finally they wheeled me upstairs to prep me for the D & C.  I went to the bathroom again, and everything came out.  Again, it was grey and spongy.  They did perform the D & C just to be sure everything came out, but at that point I wasn't in any more pain.  I did not bleed after the surgery.

  • i bled heavily for about 2 hours... accompanied by bad cramps... The cramps had been happening for about 8 hours before hand, but they were just annoying and uncomfortable... the painful ones started about 2 hours before the bleeding...
  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

I had a natural m/c at 6w3d and it started with extremely heavy cramping - worse than I ever had with AF.  I was so afraid to go to the bathroom once the cramping started because I knew what would happen.  Sure enough, I passed several large clots over a period of hours and then it was pretty much over.   My OB led me to believe I would bleed heavily for days, so I went out and bought a bunch of pads but never needed more than a pantyliner.  I spotted for a few days and then it was over.  No other symptoms besides loss of appetite, but I think that was more emotional than physical.

Good luck - I'll be thinking of you.
