Background: this is about the SIL of one of my BFFs. She (the SIL) has a twin sister who had been trying to get pregnant for years. In fact, the SIL felt horribly guilty when she was able to have a healthy pregnancy about 3 years ago and I think her twin had just had a miscarriage. Miraculously, they both got pregnant at approximately the same time about 9-10 months ago! Can you even imagine the joy of being pregnant at the same time as your twin sister? How cool is that!
SIL delivered a healthy baby boy about 2-3 weeks ago and everyone was so excited. Her twin's due date is tomorrow I believe so of course the family was pretty much overcome with joy in anticipation of the new arrivals.
SIL of course talked to her twin constantly... but yesterday while on the phone with her, her sister became unresponsive. She had passed out.
Next news is that she is in a coma, losing so, so much blood. They did an emergency c-section and the baby did not have a heartbeat either, but survived. They both got hooked up to life support (the baby had to be transferred to another hospital). The baby had apparently been putting too much pressure on her spleen and an artery there ruptured. Operating on it even after the c-section was just as dangerous as not operating. They had refilled her body with blood two times by this morning, still coma-induced. The baby had started having seizures. SIL flew in from Ohio (to Chicago) and never left her sister's side except to go nurse her own newborn every three hours. She had a 5% chance of survival as of this afternoon. And I just got word that she just passed on. The baby is still fighting but is facing probable brain damage and a multitude of other issues, health-wise.
If you made it this far, thank you, and please send some prayers up for this family and hug your own loved ones tight tonight. I can't even imagine what they're going through right now.
Update: The baby girl is not showing any brain activity that they can tell. Won't know for sure until she's stable enough to do an MRI. It sounds like a decision will be made on Wednesday or Thursday based on what they find out so please continue to pray for strength and peace for this family as this nightmare continues.
