Pregnancy and Colds

I'm feeling my first cold coming on during pregnancy and I can already tell it might as well just be the flu. My body aches and is so stiff. And this is the most fatigued I've felt in a looong time, but my body won't nap! If I try to lay down to sleep, I'll just be laying there for hours wondering why I'm still awake.

For anyone who's had a cold during pregnancy, give me a heads up.... how much worse was it for you being sick while pregnant?

Re: Pregnancy and Colds

  • I didn't have the flu, but I did have a terrible cold a couple weeks ago (stuffy nose, sore throat and headache throughout most of the day). The worst part about it was I was trying hard not to take any meds. After a week I gave in and looked at my "ok to take" list I had gotten from my dr, and took some Robitussen DM. It helped, but not much. Good luck and hopefully you will start to feel better soon!!

  • I'm in the middle of a cold right now. no body aches though, just the usual stuffy nose, sore throat, etc. I'm trying to tough it out and take absolutely nothing by oj and naps, but I really, really miss my Nyquil.

  • My cold lasted for about twice as long as it would have if my immune system was fully up and running :/

  • I may or may not be coming down with my fourth cold of the season right now. (I'm a professor and my first-years are always sick). It takes longer for the cold to pass and (for me at least) I pick up every bug I encounter.

I've taken Tylenol a few times if my throat was bad and I use vicks vapor rub (gross, but it works) if I'm too stuffy to breathe. . .also, sleep a ton, of course, and gatorade is helpful.

  • I can't take any cold medicine anymore after discovering I have a severe allergy to the cough ingredient in them!  It stinks....try hot steamy showers and vicks vapor rub on your feet with socks when you sleep!  I have sinus/allergy stuff right now that I just can't shake.  I agree pregnancy makes me feel more run down!

  • oj

    naps

    humidifier

mucinex ended up being a lifesaver. was cough so much but not producing anything. It is safe to take just not the new fancy dm one. the regular or the expectorant and cough suppressant ones are safe.

And yes, it was a little bit worse being pregnant.

  • I have a lingering cold.  It wasn't all that much worse except it brought out some of my neuro issues.  I drink a lot of hot water w/ honey and lemon.  Honey is supposed to work almost as well as cough medicine, and I've used it with a lot of success.  GL.
  • I had it reallllly bad last week and I finally buckled and went to my gen dr for a script for antibiotics.  I still have a lingering cough at night and I put vicks vapor rub on my feet and then socks and that solves that problem.

My dr also OK'd plain robotussin and benadryl.  I used them only when it was really bad.

I hope you feel better soon :)

  • sorry to be a bummer but I'm on my 8th day of a cold.  It would probably be classified as a "Severe cold"  but nonetheless it has sucked.  I MISS NYQUIL!!  Been sticking to what's on the doctor's okay list, Robitussin, Sudafed.  Had to break down and go to the regular doc on Wednesday to get something stronger and got preggo-safe antibiotics to hopefully clear out any infection.  The absolute worst has been the coughing, which tends to get worse at night right before bedtime.  I just dealt with it for the first 5 days or so and then borrowed one of those vicks humidifiers from my parents.  Had it on while I slept and it did help a decent amount.  I also rubbed some Vicks vapo rub on my neck and chest which helped some too.  Still some coughing but definitely reduced.  I recommend it if you get to that point.  Good luck, hope you start feeling better (hope I do too!)

I replied before I read your quote.  You put it on your feet?  I may try that tonight along with putting it on my chest.

  • I got a bad cold the week after my flu shot (coincidence?).  I was suuuuuuuuuuper miserable at times, but tried to stay extra diligent about chicken soup, emergen-c, lots of rest and lots of fluids.  It went away after about a week, thank goodness.  I hope you feel better soon!!

  • Yeah I've never heard of the Vicks on the feet either. I'll have to try it. Last night I had 2 mid night cough attacks then spent a good amount of time after doing the throat clearing thing. So frustrating!

  • I am on day 3 of my cold.  It really sucks.  I miss my dayquil/nyquil.  I've been told to try a neti pot, which I did.  I hated it, but other swear by it.
