I have to admit that this board really opened my eyes to names. There were things I didn't think of when choosing names before coming here. You're naming a person who will grow up and get a job, not just a cute little toddler with a squeeky voice. Unique spellings will make life difficult for children later. Made up or smoosh names don't make children unique or special. The information and advice given here made sense to me and I realized there's a lot to think about when naming a human being who will grow up and become an adult!
Names I had on my list before discovering this board:
Girl: Acelyn, Emery, Emelyn, Ellison, Gracelyn, McKenzie, Kennedy
Boy names weren't as bad: Donovan, Brandon, Maddox, Keegan, Christian, Adam, Gradin
Names on my list after discovering this board and coming to my senses:
Girl: Colette, Cosette, Magdalen, Audra, Renee (DD), Elizabeth, Georgia
Boy: Benjamin, Darren, Adam, Brandon
Re: Has this board knocked sense into anyone else?
Yes, this board has definitely opened my eyes. I used to love Crawford and Sawyer for boys. Now, not so much. Esp since Crawford is a "random" last name. I was obsessed with Rowan for a girl but after being here I've decided it's better on a boy.
Names I like since coming here that I'd never thought about before: Carys, Ivy, Rowan (boy), Elizabeth, Callum

This! Most of my friends and family have kids named Peyton, Caden, Jayden, Kaylee, etc. plus about a million Maddie's. I found this board when I was pregnant with DD over 2 years ago (I now have a different email/screen name), and it has made me much more confident in my name selections. It has also helped me convince my husband that maybe my name list isn't so "out there."
Ditto
This!

This, especially the bolded part. I was worried about the reactions we'd get when DH pushed for Francis. The board didn't bat an eye, really, which made me feel more confident about our choice.
I am a horrible speller though, so I do credit the board with teaching me the proper spelling of Aidan. Now if I could only figure out restaurant...
I felt this way for the first ummm six months then I started learning! I personallly never mean to come off as a *** to anyone, Its just (liked you learned) we are naming a human being! What we say on this board, others will say behind your back! Which is better? Glad you learned a few tid bits! names from my past list were Zion, Navy, Breeze, and Avaleigh <----YIKES!!!! Thank GOD these ladies talked sense into me! My daughter now has a perfectly acceptable, respectable name. One that looks cute on her as a child but she can also grow up with!
My job in child welfare exposes me to really HORRIBLE (and some down right ignorant) names.
I've been overly sensitive to the "Now featured on the main stage test" and the "CEO test". Say, (in your best DJ in a strip club voice) Now featured on the main stage [name]. And then say (in your best official introduction voice), Now, to give the key note address our CEO [name]. I think most people would want the name to fit more with the later than the former.
Its given me reassurance to be confident in our choices.
I'm sure you remember that I thought you were a troll at first. Sorry about that! Clearly you aren't, but some of those names sent up red flags to me.
Wow, those lists are quite different! FWIW, I think your daughter's name is refreshing.
I have the same taste in names that I had before I started posting here, but this board has definitely helped me grow my list...which is a good and bad thing.
Yeah, me too. But it's helpful to hear stranger's opinions on names sometimes. I know even if they hated the name we chose our families (well, maybe not my dad or my MIL) would smile and pretend to like it. It's been somewhat helpful to hear the impression some people have of a particular name.
Until I joined this board, I had no idea of some of the naming trends, only one of my friends has a child, so it's not like I've been exposed to lots of names and such.
Oh, yes!! Like a couple others mentioned, this board has given me confidence to seriously consider some of the more underused names.
On the other hand, though, this board had made me kind of sad. There were several names that I have loved and adored since I was a child, but I had no idea how popular they had become (Abigail in particular). I still don't personally know any by that name, but I don't want my little girl to be one of 5 Abby's in her class. Crushed dreams...
