CD Mamas~ I need your help! **MORE questions added**

I really want to start cloth diapering but until I finish student teaching I think I just want to CD at night and when I am home. My main reason for wanting to CD is because my son's diapers always leak at night! He's a tummy sleeper so most mornings his jammies are damp or wet since the front of his diaper is so full but the back of his diaper is practically dry.

I have done some research but I feel so ovewhelmed with all of the information and different brands! I have no idea what kind to get or how many I will need!

I saw the BabyKicks on Zulily so I went to the BabyKicks website and it says it comes with the pocket shell, a one size insert, and a newborn insert that can be used as a doubler... what's a doubler?

Then I looked at the BRU website and they have BumGenius 4.0 CD's 2 for $35.99, I thought maybe this would be good to get so I can try them out, but I am just lost!

I'm pretty sure I want to use one size pockets and I need a lot of absorbency.

Any info you can give me would be great!

Oh one more thing, we live in an apartment so line drying is out of the question, I read that you aren't supposed to use dryer sheets with them and if you dry them in a dryer that had dryer sheets in it from a previous load the residue can transfer to the CDs... I don't want to ruin them or make them wear out faster so how else can I dry them?

Thank you so much!

Re: CD Mamas~ I need your help! **MORE questions added**

  • I love pockets.

If you want to try BG they are a lot cheaper at cottonbabies.com or other online sites rather than BRU. Plus they run specials. If he is a heavy wetter you will probably have to double up at night or use a natural fiber insert (bamboo or hemp) as a doubler (2 inserts). Bamboo and Hemp tend to absorb more than microfiber.

  • Loading the player...
  • oh an we do use dryer sheets. I mainly hang dry my dipes but if the inserts are still damp when it is almsot time to stuff I will toss in the dryer for abour 10 minutes. I have not noticed any problems with residue from the dryer.
  • 1. go to the cd board and check out the FAQ at the top right. I am going to skip some of your questions and answer the ones that stick out..

IF you are going to CD stop using dryer sheets ALL TOGETHER they will cause repelling and can affect your diapers EVEN if you ONLY use them in the dryer with other clothes .get some dryer balls..they are awesome.

You really should get a drying rack anOd use that instead for all of the shells.. it expands the life of the diaper and using a dryer can void a warranty.

A doubler is a smaller insert that adds absorbency. So, you could take two inserts (regular size) and stuff them into one pocket diaper and one would act as a 'doubler'.

    Really quick.

. insert- what you put into the diaper to absorb the pee.. can be microfiber or bamboo/cotton

doubler- added absorbency which could be microfiber, bamboo/cotton OR hemp (hemp absorbs a lot of pee but *more slowly so you want to put it behind something that quickly absorbs pee to avoid leaks)

liner- something like fleece that you would use next to baby's groin. You can use this if you have to use non safe CD diaper rash ointment OR just for the stay dry affect (like dry fit it wicks away moisture but it does nothing to help with absorbency).

I gotta run.. baby is crying.. be back later..

    eta to fix some mistakes..

Dryer balls are amazing! Makes drying quicker and clothes smell better with them.

  • I haven't heard great things about the baby kicks.

If you are just thinking about CDing for overnight and at home, you should look into fitteds and wool. We have a super soaker tummy sleeper that we put in a Bumboo fitted and a kissaluvs wool cover. We have never had a leak. They are also one of the few bamboo fitteds that stay dry over time when drying in the dryer. They are made with silk instead of polyester.

Like pp said, skip out on dryer sheets all together, if you are going to use your dryer.

We also love the flip system for at home. It's user friendly and quick drying.

This series of videos really helped me when I was first starting out -

  • I have also not used baby kicks
  • I've used a babykicks and really didn't like the one I had. I sold it after using it maybe 4 times. It leaked every time. I really like my BG 4.0s, BG Elementals. Rumparooz are pretty good too, although a bit pricey and tend to run small...a sbish snapless fitted with wool is a great nighttime combo! I would also recommend reading the FAQ on the CD board. It was super helpful when starting out! GL! Keep us posted on how things are going!

  • Ditto PP. My BG 4.0's are my favorites.

I also like my SunBabys, Rumparooz are ok for us too. I like Kawaii but not as much as others seem to. I really dislike our Tweedlebugs.

Kawaiis seem to be good for heavy wetters.

  • I'm trying to sell three FuzziBunz One Size pockets if you're interested to try them out before spending full-price! I have buttercream, choco truffle, and apple green left. I'm asking $12 each. For what it's worth, we use fitteds and wool or an extra stuffed pocket for overnight. Works great for up to 12 hours or so.

  • I love love love my BG 4.0 OS.

Some of the CD lingo is foreign to me still. I keep it simple. I actually just bought 3 BG 4.0's off someone on facebook thebump's cloth diapering. Buying used is a great option.

Dryer balls are nice. I actually didn't know the info about dryer sheets. I hate them anyway, but DH likes to use them.

The cover/shell of the BG's dries quickly. I dry them indoors 99% of the time.

I have one Baby Kicks and it's the worst diaper in my stash.  It's absorbacy is fine, but takes FOREVER to dry and even though it's only been worn a handful of times, it looks like it's been used for years.  The hip snaps are not my favorite and it's super hard to stuff and get the insert flat.

If you are looking for good deals, my favorite place to order is from Kelly's Closet.  They usually have a free diaper code or two with a minimum order.  Also, BumGenius is on Buy 5 Get One Free until Monday I think.

I'm planning to destash my Fuzzibunz since they don't seem to fit DS very well.  PM me if you are interested in them.

I just saw the deal on Kelly's closet and I think I am going to go for it!

Thanks to everyone on the insight about BabyKicks! I probably would've bought them thinking I was getting a good deal on a great product and then hated CD'ing! So glad I asked here first!

    A couple more questions...

How many diapers do you typically go through per day?

Between hemp and bamboo inserts which one is more absorbent?

What kind of detergent do you use? Is there a special stain remover too?

Is there a specific diaper pail I need?

  • I think you will really like the BG 4.0's. *If that is the deal you are talking about from Kelly's Closet.

We wash every second day. We have 4 night time combo's (2 just in case) and about 24 daytime diapers. I change my baby's diaper about every 2 hours, or unless there is poop. I would recommend about 24 diapers.

Hemp and Bamboo are both super absorbent, but I would say that hemp wins in my opinion. The only thing about hemp though is that is a slower absorber than say cotton or bamboo. Some babies pee too fast, too much for hemp. For us, hemp is perfect.

Just to give you an idea - we are currently using

Daytime: All 3 of these options are super trim and user friendly

Thirsties hemp prefolds laid in a Flip cover, or
BG 4.0's & Tots Bots Easy fits

Night time: Bullet proof! We lay in a fleece liner that wicks moisture away from baby's bum, providing a comfortable stay dry feeling.

Bumboo fitted with a wool cover (kissaluv's)

Detergent - this depends on what type of machine you have. We use tiny bubbles and love it. We have a regular top loader and our was routine is,

Cold rinse to get off the nasties,
Hot wash/cold rinse cycle with 2 scoops detergent
Followed by another cold rinse to be sure all the soap is out.

Honestly, stains happen. But - the sun is amazing at taking out stains. Once you wash your diapers you can lay any with stains out in the sun while still wet. The sun will bleach it within a few hours! If it is an especially stubborn stain you can spray a bit of lemon juice on it and then sun dry.

You don't need any specific diaper pail. Get a large garbage can without a lid from walmart and put a pail liner in it. Planet wise makes a good one. Using a pail without a lid allows air to circulate making your dirty diapers hardly smell at all!

If you have anymore questions, just ask!

Sorry for my terrible grammar and ESL type sentences. I'm typing left handed and am exhausted. :)
