Pumping but not getting any milk- PISA

When I try to pump with my PISA NOTHING at all comes out- My milk has come in and I can express milk by hand. I have tried using just one pump and Ive tried both at one time. I waited about 10 minutes today after giving up but yesterday I let it suck the bejesus out of me for about 40 minutes before I threw in the towel. I bought the pump used, but it just worked a few days ago.

Any ideas?

  • Have you checked the membranes (little white thingys)?

  • Over the summer PISA's were recalled, I had one, it did the same thing. A friend of mine did to she quit BF because she thought she didn't have milk when it was a broken pump the whole time!

  • Depending on when you got the pump, the recall is a possibility - if anything else, call Medela's customer support number and the'yll be able to tell you if that's the case with your particular pump...  OTOH, the membranes are the likely culprit...  It's a known maintenance issue with Medela pumps and they need to be changed out "frequently"...  Just keep extra on hand (yes, get the multi-pack!) and when one goes just toss it in the trash and replace it out...

  • I would recommend the Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump with Carry All. Never had problems with it when I was a pumping mom.
  • what should I be looking at with the membranes? They are both fully intact and not ripped at all.
