Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Question for Experienced Moms re: 30-45 min naps

I have a question...I was reading on the Baby Whisperer forum that most babies learn to extend their nap times on their own around 6 or so months. So these 30-45 minute naps will naturally get longer as they mature. Experienced moms, is this the case? Is all this stress and worry about extending short naps (which rarely works for my LO) something that will work itself out one day?

Re: Question for Experienced Moms re: 30-45 min naps

  • My LO has just recently (the last week or so) started often sleeping 1+ hours after months of 30-45 min. So yes, I'd say eventually it just works itself out.

  • I don't know the answer, really, but my experience does tell me that it's not worth it to stress about naps. I used to CRY because I was so frustrated with my DD's poor naps. But you know what, it wasn't worth all that heart ache. There's not much you can do about it anyway.

  • My LO started a 2-3 hour afternoon nap about 3 weeks ago.  Other than that it's 30-45 minute naps -- he did it on his own (I can't take the credit lol) and honestly he was happy when he was taking 30-45 minute naps so I tried not to stress about it.

  • It works itself out, thank goodness. Over the last 2 weeks or so, my LO has been taking two 1 1/2-2 hour naps during the day and then a shorter nap in the evening. After months of 40 minute naps, it's been heaven. :)

  • DD1's naps actually started getting worse around the 5 - 6 month time period. I had a hard time with her naps for several months after that. It got a lot better when she turned 1.

That said, i didn't stress and worry too much about extending them.  I guess it's all a matter of perspective.

  • Totally works itself out.  I follow a lax "schedule" with EASY - eat, activity, sleep, etc, but with no following clock.  Did with DD, too.  Didn't read the book, but followed simplest terms.  DD had normal longer naps when she got a little older (prob 6 monthish).  I think she did three.  Then two a bit later and then one three hour nap after she turned one and still now to some extent.  It gets better and happens naturally.  (Well, for us, and most people I know, it did.)

  • I'm just happy my kid is napping now for 30 Minutes. It used to take me forever to get her asleep! Now she will at least go down and takes about 4 naps of 30-45 minutes a day. She sleeps from 7:30 PM til 9AM with 3 or so wake ups. Sometimes she naps a bit longer during the day, but she gets at least 12 hours at night so i don't worry about it.
