Breastfeeding

recommend your freezing method

I started to build a stash using ice cube trays made for breastmilk. It sounded like a great idea, but the trays leak and the cubes in freezer bags take up a lot more space than I anticipated (darn bottom drawer freezer sounded like a good idea before I was a mom!).

I'm using playtex drop in nursers, so I'm hoping for something that will work easily with that. I do have the adapter kit that allows me to pump right into the drop ins, which works great for pumping for the next day or two/fridge, but I've read they're not good for freezing, plus they don't seal or lay flat, and I don't want to buy a ton of kits to have enough pieces for a stash.

What do you use? Is it cost and storage room conscious? TIA!

Edited to add...

I have the Medla PISA, but the bags made by them are EXPENSIVE! Are there any cheaper brands that are compatible, or will I be pumping and then transferring (that's ok, not ideal, but ok).

Re: recommend your freezing method

  • I can't be too helpful because I use the special ice cube trays and quart size freezer bags.  We have a chest freezer in the basement, which is where the BM goes into long term storage so it's not taking up room in our kitchen freezer.

I've never used the specific BM bags.I have heard that Amazon has good deals on them, though, especially if you do a subscribe and save.

  • I pump into bottles, then when I go to store I put into Lanishoh freezer bags.  I then use the gift bag storage method to put in the freezer, and that helps keep the stash organized and in one place.  Google "gift bag breast milk storage" and you should find a video on how to create the dispenser system.  It's really neat.

  • I'm another who pumps into medela and then freezes in lansinoh bags.  You can get coupons to make them a little cheaper.  I use lansinoh breast pads and they come with coupons for $1 off 2 boxes of bags.  I use drop-ins, too, but I don't like freezing milk in there.

One way to keep the cost down is just to freeze occasionally.  I give DD fresh milk all week, then freeze what I pump on Friday and do frozen on Mondays just to cycle through my stash.

I lay the bags flat to freeze, then put them in a big ziploc by month.  The gift bag thing looks great, though.  I'm going to try that!

I pump into medela bottles then transfer into Lansinoh bags.  They freeze flat and thaw quickly.  I use the "gift bag method" to store them (there's a you tube video how-to).  Oh and you can buy them through amazon subscribe and save for a pretty good deal.

I do this exact same thing. The bags are awesome & are about $25 for 150.
