FTM Question again...

What's the time difference between a manual and electric pump? Is it worth the extra money?

Re: FTM Question again...

  • I have a Medela Freestyle and also a freebie Ameda manual pump that I was given in the hospital. The Ameda pump is actually surprisingly efficient and I'm able to express several ounces using it in a fairly short period of time.

For me though, I need an electric pump because coupled with a pumping bra it allows me the use of both of my hands. Now that I'm home I can throw some lunch together or hold dd all while I'm pumping. Because a manual pump requires both hands, for me, it's just not feasible and I use my manual pump in the middle of the night when I'm too lazy to get up and pump.

I can't really answer if it will be worth the extra money for you because it really depends on your needs, but for me it was well worth it.

  • I went through two or three manual pumps before I broke down and bought a Medela PIS.  I would absolutely recommend an electric pump over manual - especially if you plan on BF longterm.  The timing could be about the same - depending on how good you are with getting the rhythm down, but with the electric, I always had a much more productive let down with around 8-12 oz. in 5-7 minutes.

    GL to you!

  • Will you be working or otherwise be away from the baby on a regular basis?  If so, a double electric pump is a must.  It works off electricity or batteries and pumps both breasts at once.  A manual, you have to operate by hand and it only does one breast at a time.

If you're going to be with the baby most of the time and have no supply problems, you might be just fine with a manual pump or no pump at all.

  • If you are working you need the electic. Your hands will cramp trying to pump 3x a day to get enough for LO. I take my manual in my diaper bag (well I used to) and if we were on date night and I'd pump on the ride home. It's also good as a backup in case I forget my pump stuff (I have two). It is NOT a replacement or substitute for an electric. If money is an issue look at the Lansinoh pump, it's the same as the Ameda but much cheaper. I love my Ameda Purely Yours, it's cheaper on Amazon too.
