WTF? tmi post

So since about 2 days post partum I have had horrible burning on one side of my labia by the vaginal opening, particularly when I pee.  I kept thinking this is normal it will go away.  Well today I finally was able to get a good look at it.  By the vaginal opening inside the folds of the labia there is a 3 or 4 inch long cut, it looks like somebody just took a razor blade and scraped off a layer of skin, it is very red, not even close to normal color.  Is this a normal part of tearing or something else? I seriously feel dumb for asking this but the nurses in the hospital never really clued me in on what to expect as far as this part goes.

  • I would call your doctor just to be on the safe side. Did you have an episiotomy, or any tearing?

  •  I did have tearing, but no episiotomy or tearing near the rectum, it was all vaginal tearing.  The nurse said it was 1st degree.
  • I'm a labor and delivery RN and yes, unfortunately you can tear that way. It's called a sulcus tear. They are usually stitched up. I'm not sure if yours was or it wasn't deep enough and it's like a giant scrape. First of all, make sure it isn't infected. It is normal for a tear like that to burn but look for redness around the area and oozing...that shouldn't be there. It would be normal for the inside of the tear to be red but look for redness surrounding the area. If there is any question, I would call your Dr. and have them check it out. Feel better soon. HTH.

  • Thanks SDC, you gave me a better answer then half of the nurses at the hospital would have.  Do you know about how long it usually takes to heal? I am only 8 days post partum but it's horrible.  I don't even want to pee because of it.
  • First of all, OUCH!!! I had a 2nd degree tear, and the spray bottle saved my life. I used it every time I went pee for weeks! Seriously, make sure you spray with water while you're peeing...it will feel so much better. I hope you feel better soon...
