Breastfeeding

Fresh or Frozen?

Hello!  I was wondering what the best/easiest method is for feeding LO when I go back to work?  I go back to work on Nov 7th and I have built up a small stash of pumped breast milk.  I will be pumping at work the same number of times DD is feeding with the nanny.

So is it best to give DD the fresh milk that I pump the day before OR is it better to thaw out the frozen milk each day and then freeze the freshly pumped milk each day?

Re: Fresh or Frozen?

  • I pumped everyday at work and gave the milk to LO the next day.  Except Friday and any weekend milk, I froze it.  I used frozen milk for the Monday daycare bottles.  That way my stash got replaced with fresher milk.  Also once a month check your stash and make sure it is not getting too old and needs to be used soon.

  • It's better to give fresh milk when you can.
  • I always give fresh milk when I can.  However, I always keep on eye on my freezer stash too and bring the milk in rotation when need be - even if it's for a bottle/cup or two, with the rest of her day's milk being fresh.

Ditto.  Freezing Friday's milk and thawing the oldest frozen milk for Monday keeps your stash from expiring while also making sure lo gets a majority of fresh milk.  Also, I keep one day worth extra milk in the freezer at daycare (just in case) and switch that out once a month.

If you ever get sick try to give lo fresh milk as much as you can so they get the most recent antibodies.
