Candy "rules"

How will you handle all the Halloween Candy? We don't ever keep candy in the house so it's never been an issue (mainly because I have ZERO willpower and will eat it all). Between a party at my work and at Pre-K, J already has a big bag of candy. I got about 2 hrs of sleep and woke up to his bed soaked in pee so when he asked if he could have pleeeeeeease have m&m's at 7:30am I just said fine. Will you make an exception for the "holiday" or am I the only bad mommy, lol?

Re: Candy "rules"

  • We just plan on taking Evan to a little TorT event tomorrow in the Elmwood village, so he'll have minimal candy.

He never gets candy at home, so I doubt he'll even ask for it... I'll probably save a few good pieces for me ;), some M&M's for him as a treat (his fave) and take the rest to work... or give it out on Monday to the trick or treaters.

Sometimes Evan will wake up and ask for something ridiculous for breakfast... like ice cream. I just tell him it's not for breakfast and give him a few options of what he can have. I'll probably just do the same if he asks for Halloween candy.

  • We tell him that he has to wait until after dinner, then he can choose 1 piece from his bucket. He's a sugar junkie like his mommy, so I have to ration it, otherwise he'll eat it all in one sitting. He's gung ho about he candy for about a week, then he kind of forgets about it (especially if I don't have it in plain sight), so I can usually get rid of it after that.
  • I may be a bad mommy for this, but I give away a lot of the kids' candy.  We have a ton from various events this past month, I let them eat what they want of it at the actual event (well, within some reason).  Then when we get home I stash away about 95% of it, the 5% get put in a bowl for after dinner treats.  Sometimes they randomly ask for a piece, as long as it is in moderation, like 2-3 times a week, I don't mind giving them random pieces.  As for halloween candy, I pick through that and put it back in our treat bowl.  They don't get sticky or hard candy, like Laffy Taffy, gum balls, or jaw breakers.  Again, they can eat what they want the night.  Anything left beyond a small amount, my DH takes to work.  They just think it is fun to collect it.  Last year, Tyler wasn't into going very far so he only went to about 6-7 houses.  Both kids enjoyed giving out candy and having the kids come to them more than going door to door.
  • of course I will let her have candy for the holiday! What would be the point of halloween if I didn't?  She actually hasn't asked for it much.. suprisingly, cuz the kid has a major sweet tooth.

  • Claire had a few Smarties today before school.  I suppose when it comes to a holiday I'm a little more lax.

  • I have mornings like that. Where I just don't care what she eats for breakfast because I'm frustrated with the morning and I'm like "fine! just have it..."
But during Halloween, I let her have two pieces a day- providing she eats her meals. She gets to pick 1 piece after lunch, and 1 piece after dinner. (her choices).

  • Lately DD can have 1 piece after lunch and 1 after dinner - but she has to have a fresh fruit or veggie with those meals in order to earn the candy.  If we are out and about - like we went to Fright Fest at Great Escape - I let her have some while we were there.
  • R doesn't know much about candy...he gets it occasionally and will have some Halloween treats. He thinks a candy counter (like the rows of the single bars at CVS under the registers) are cereal bars! lol He has had bites of candy but never a whole piece. He does get dumdums for special treats, like hair cut days. I am pretty sure I will let him have something if he asks for it for the week after TOT....anytime of the day.

A dentist once told me that they prefer kids eat all the junk at Halloween during the first week, it is worse on the teeth to let it drag out and only giving a piece a day for 6 mos.

  • We are only going to probably get a little bit, so we will give him a piece a day for a few days and then either eat the rest ourselves or throw it out.  This is what we did at Easter, as he got a ton of candy from the grandparents and it was just too much.

  • Alex really hasn't had much candy, but Mike loves his candy.

I put it in a container and ration it out as dessert after dinner.  I'll also put a small piece in his lunch at school.  I've got to throw out the rest of the Easter candy out this weekend.  LOL
