My Babies Don't Like Sippy Cups Tips?

I'm having a hard time introducing a sippy cup.  I've been trying to get them to use one on and off for awhile now, but not consistently.  I tried again this morning and they both turned away from it when I offered it.  They love their bottles so I wonder if this is going to be a challenge for us.  I use the Tommee Tippee brand with the soft, rubber spout.  I have some hard spouted cups too.

Any tips or suggestions?

  • DD refused to use a sippy cup until closer to a year old, although we offered her one almost daily starting around 8 or 9 months. We finally got her to take the take and toss ones but we had to hold them for her until she was about 13 months. We didn't start cutting down bottles until then. They will figure it out :)

  • Honestly J didn't get the whole sippy cup thing until 12/13mths..Then just one day he got that you need to hold it and tip you cup up to get any liquid out..It was just a lot of practice

We used the tommy tippy ones and Nuck ones in the beginning. He likes that Nubby ones (tried the playtex ones and he hated the hard sputed top)..

  • We had luck at first with the Nuby Sports Sippers, but they leak like crazy and are super annoying. I was happy to see them go when she finally got the hang od the straw cups. Have you tried a straw cup yet? Might be worth picking some up to see if they take to that better.

  • We went through probably 6 different brands before we found one that DD liked.
  • E actually used a straw cup before a regular sippy, but he would always try to turn it up, so the end of the straw wouldn't get any liquid and I would have to hold it for him. I did this for a few days just while he got used to something besides a nipple. Then we switched to sippies. He seemed to do better with the ones with handles.

  • CJ, my kids aren't big fans of traditional sippies but they love LOVE love straws. I got them the Take and Toss straw sippies (after some recs from this board!) and disposable bendy straws and they go to town. The cups themselves are not spill proof, so I keep the cups to meals only. But they are great drinkers now!
  • I started trying sippy cups with E at 6 months old.  At that point it was just filled with water and he played around with it.  I tried at least 10 different kinds of sippy cups and he hated all of them.  He went right to a straw cup and still uses it.  When he was on a bottle, we had to go with a faster nipple since we were mixing rice cereal in with his milk.  I don't think he liked sippy cups, because they didn't give hime what he wanted fast enough.
