28 month...what to give for cough??

What do you give for a cough??  Peds office told me a 1/2 of a Triaminic Thin strip but I'm nervous b/c the box says Not to give to kids up 4 years of age.  Anyone try them??  DS has been up 2 nights coughing and it just sounds painful.

  • I'd go with what your pedi recommends.  We give DD 1/2 tsp of Delsym (per pedi) and it always helps her cough.

  • DS has a cough too. I'm going to try honey and I just bought some of the vicks baby vapo rub and the little plug in vicks vaporizers for babies. They don't have medication in them, just menthol and lavender. My mom said she used vicks when I was little and it really helped my cough so I'm gonna give it a try. I'm not comfortable giving him cough syrup.
  • We've been dealing with a nighttime cough for nearly a week now...its brutal! We had been trying Vicks and a humidifier, along with Tylenol, and it wasn't working. So, yesterday I bought Hyland's night time cough formula (it is all natural and considered safe for toddlers as there is no medicine in it) and also gave DS a 1/4 teaspoon of benedryl (which has been approved by his doctor previously). We still rubbed vicks on him and used the humidifier. I also really tried to keep him elevated as much as I could (he still rolls to the bottom of where I want him to be, no matter what!). He did a TON better last night. Woke up coughing after the meds wore off but fell back asleep again quickly with a second dose of Hylands. Good luck! Coughing keeps everyone awake and miserable!

THIS. My pediatrician is anti-cold medicine for those under 6, and I feel the same way. My DD had a nasty cold a couple weeks ago and I knew she wouldn't take straight honey, so I made her "honey water," boiled some water and put some honey it....and she drank it! Good luck!

  • DD's pedi said we could use Mucinex.

  • We struggle with a cough once a month or so. Mostly I just do the humidifier, lots of fluids and rest and vit c rich foods, but I have given DS children's mucinex. It works like a charm to break up the mucus that he is trying to cough up. He has had a cold for a week and one night I gave him the mucinex and within 2 hours he coughed up a huge gross ball of phlem and slept the whole night without coughing. Hope your LO is better soon!

  • My pharmacist recommended children's tylenol for DD's cough, and I was really shocked that it actually worked really well. My pedi and pharmacist also both say no cough meds until they're much older.
