Diaper Rash - already!

Help!  LO's little bum is all kinds of red.  We change him often (i think we go through 20+ diapers a day) let him air dry a bit and have been using Triple Paste each time.  The hospital sent us home with little packs of medicated ointment and gauze (sp?) to use in place of wipes.  I am thinking about switching back to these items for a few days.  Any suggestions?  TIA!

Re: Diaper Rash - already!

  • I would try using a warm washcloth on poopy diapers and just letting baby air out after wet, no wipes. The hospital told us no diaper cream before a month and gave us a little tube of something else to use if we needed it.

  • It's probably from wipes. This happened with my DD and she needed a prescription cream to get rid of it. We had to go back to wet cloths instead of wipes until it was gone. Also, I heard no diaper cream for a month too, but you could use vasoline. Once the rash was gone on my DD we were able to use wipes again. With DS I slowly started using wipes and he seems to be fine.

  • Shoot, no one told me that!  Ok, no diaper cream and no wipes for a few weeks.  Washcloths and ointment it is.  Thanks ladies!  Big Smile

  • our pedi rec. A&D ointment and it worked in less than 12 hours.  you can't use anything with zinc oxide in it yet--their skin is too sensitive.

I think A&D is better than vasoline because (and I could be wrong) vasoline traps the moisture.

  • Another thing to consider is switching to a natural diaper.  We had major diaper rash issues when we first got home.  DS was in the Pampers Swaddlers and we realized that the combo of those and using wipes on his sensitive newborn skin was a bad combo.  We went to a natural diaper and cloth wipes and used ButtPaste on him (per Dr. advice) and it cleared up in a couple of days.  Hang in there!

  • My pedi recommended butt paste (we use triple paste) when DD had a rash at her two week appt.

He never mentioned not using anything until one month.

  • We use paper towels and water to wipe Luke, because by the time he was three days old his bottom was rashy and red from baby wipes.  We also use Aquaphor on him to keep the moisture away from his skin, especially at night.  Baby wipes might just be too harsh for your LO right now.

Levi got a diaper rash a few days after we got home and at his 5 day check up we were told we could use destine on it to help.  I just had him back yesterday as they had to redo his heel prick and his doctor looked at his bottom again. He told me to use a warm towel to clean Poopy diapers, let him air out and then use the destine at every change. It is almost gone expect for a few little spots

  • Our little guy had a horrible rash once we got home...we tried everything and nothing worked. We went to our pedi to see if we needed a prescription, she recommended making a corn starch/maalox paste and it worked like a charm, we saw results the next day and it cleared up completely a few days later. Also, make sure bottom is dry before putting any cream/ointment on so it doesn't lock in moisture. GL!

exactly.  and the A&D is a little thicker--it is petrolatum and lanolin.  worked for us!

The A&D seems to be working!  His little bum is not as red now.  Thanks ladies.  We will be using this for a while and holding off on the wipes.

Awesome! We've never used anything other than A&D. You also don't need to wipe after every wet diaper in general. I only do when they are really wet and it's on their skin.
  • Lilah's tush has been really red.  She poops so much and doesn't let us know when she has a dirty diaper so we don't always change her immediately... We haven't been using wipes, we are wetting dry wipes and using triple paste, but she's still so red.
