Babies: 0 - 3 Months

At my wits end..need help/advice please!

DD is 7 weeks old and I feel like we should be passed this stage, but I guess we are not, but I need some advice from some other mommies!  I am 31 and have a 6 year old, but my DD is making me feel like I've never touched a baby and it's really taking its toll.

She will NOT go to sleep in her own bassinet at night..it's like she cannot get comfortable.

Our dilemma:   I will change her diaper, etc.  where all needs are met, but it's like she just wants to be rocked and sometimes that doesn't even work.  She sleeps like a charm during the day in her swing..wakes occasionally throughout the day to nurse and then wakes up for about 2-3 hours in the evening.  I give her a bath and then feed her, change diaper, etc.  Then that is when all hell breaks lose.  I try to lay her down after rocking her and 10 minutes later she will wake up crying.  Same thing over and over and over.  I try to rock her, she falls asleep, I try to lay where she can lay on my chest....crying...back to the bassinet...crying.  I thought for a little while that maybe her days and nights are confused since she sleeps so well in her swing during the day. But she yawns and yawns and yawns at night..and sometimes starts crying after her yawn.  She definitely isn't up and looking around happily.  Does it sound like she's overtired?  Is she sleeping too much during the day?  How do I get her to sleep in her bassinet? Should I start trying to put her there during the day??  OR should I just roll with the swing at night as well?  The only thing with having her in the swing at night to sleep is I know that will be a habit we will need to break soon as well....which will be another lovely encounter.

I'm just really at my wits end...I feel like the bond we are building is that of frustration because at night it's gets so dicey and we are back and forth, back and forth...:(

Thoughts? Advice? Any help from you gals would be so appreciated because Lord knows I need it!

  • oops - important information to know - she has a milk/soy allergy (but I'm dairy and soy free and she's getting better with that) and reflux which she is on medicine for.

Sorry I don't have any advice but we are going through the same thing. I bought the RnP & that's working but I think DS is very gassy which is what's bothering him. He's only 10days old

  • Get the Rock N Play. Our DD just hates sleeping flat. She sleeps wonderful in her swing too. Our DD actually laughs and plays herself to sleep in her rock n play at night and has been STTN since 3 weeks old. Seriously the RnP is a life saver!

  • You need to be more flexible- you need sleep now. Do whatever works and worry about breaking habits later when she's a bit older and you have a more established routine.

  • Some babies just have a preference as to where they like to sleep so you might want to try the swing at night to see if she will sleep in that.  My youngest brother slept in his car seat until he was 6 months old.  He would not fall/stay asleep anywhere else except the bouncer and my mom didn't like him sleeping in that at night so she went with the car seat next to their bed at night.
  • Gabrielle was the same way when she was an infant. At 6 weeks old, I moved her from the bassinet in our room, to the crib in her room, and that's when she finally started to sleep a few hours at a time. She wasn't comfy in the bassinet, and now Connor never could sleep in it either, but does fine in his crib. Guess I just got a crappy bassinet. Try putting LO in the crib(if you have one) or Pack & play. GL!

  • Have you tried giving her a paci to soothe her?  This is what I do with DD 2.  She will get a bottle after bath and I will rock her for a couple minutes until she gets drowsy.  Then I lay her down in her crib and give her the paci.  Sometimes I have to sit there for quite awhile to put it back in a zillion times before she actually falls asleep but once she falls asleep she will go 4-6 hours before waking up to eat again.

  • I would potentially try putting her to bed earlier. Do you swaddle? What about using white noise?
