I want to get my 2 1/2 yo DD a special doll for when her little sister is born. I want something lifelike that she can diaper, dress, feed (even if pretend) etc and wonder if you have any favorite dolls or recommendations for one. Although I like the idea, the actual Baby Alive doll kinda creeps me out so I definately wont get that one...

Re: Moms who already have daughters...
I'd keep it simple. I also got DD a cabbage patch doll before her brother was born, but she was only 19 months old.
As for Baby Alive, especially the one that poops/pees, I have enough real diapers to change and I know my daughter would be asking me to help her all of the time.
I don't like the dolls that you can feed and such I just keep thinking you can't really clean them.
I know they are a lot of money but what about the Twin dolls where you send in a picture and they make the doll look exactly like your picture. Not sure how long they take to make. Then you can buy your daughter a matching outfit and she can have a twin.
We got DD1 Baby Elmo (no joke--he cries, takes a bottle, needs burped) and she was enthralled. DD1 is not into dolls though. DD2 is over the moon with her babies and her favorite is a Fisher Price Little Mommy newborn doll. It does nothing. But she puts little diapers that we found on it and my mom found her a little nightgown for the doll so she puts that on it too.
I would avoid Baby Alive and keep it simple, something that she can play pretend with, but that doesn't make noise. My kids prefer the silent ones and anything that makes noise just sits at the bottom of the toy box.
DD loves her Bitty Baby. It's her favorite doll by far.
This. And it's like the size of a newborn... my dd has already been using the newborn diapers on her
I am not sure of the brand name, but my daughter has one doll that looks much like a newborn, but is very simple. It doesn't do anything like cry, poop, pee, etc. I bought mine at a specialty toy store, but I think I saw it at Walmart.
At Walmart it wasn't very expensive and I think they had all different sizes of babies. My DD has the Bitty Baby too. She really doesn't play with any of her dolls too much. She does like her one Baby Alive Doll. I think it comes with a thermometer and medicine dropper. She is the one with plastic hair. She may eat and pee, but we don't make her do so.
Agreed, no Baby Alive for us! It's just too complicated. Below is a link to one that looked good to me, but it's kind of expensive. I like what PP have mentioned with the cabbage patch dolls. I might go that route myself instead. GL!

I got DD an American Bear Doll, this one except with blond hair:

I saw a cute Cabbage Patch pair - one older doll, one newborn but it was like $60 and I couldn't justify that price.
