This may seem odd to most but whatever advice you have I'd appreciate! I work at a school with a fairly large staff. I'm not ready to announce to the whole staff yet but my principal already knows and yesterday when I went to update her about what's been happening (she's super supportive) she said, "And I want to let you know that I want to completely respect your privacy so when you're ready for me to announce this news to the staff, you'll let me know!"
Sounds great except I couldn't help but hear the "for me to announce" part. Now, its stuck in my head and since I do not know all the staff that well, I think I might actually be more comfortable with her announcing it. But then I think, Wait! This is my amazing news! Shouldn't I announce it?! I plan on telling the ones that I work with closely before she announces it but I'm not sure about the other staff I hardly see.
Just a small dilemma and I know she will respect whatever my wishes are but now I just don't know what I am more comfortable with. Any suggestions?
Re: Let my boss announce or should I?
This.
Definitely tell the people you're close with and tell your boss that a few people know and you will tell more as you feel comfortable. I work in a big office and there are people I'm not close to, so I was thinking they would hear through the grapevine or see me get bigger as the months go by. It's your news and you should be the one telling people. Don't let your boss steal your thunder.
I would tell the people you're close with and let your boss do the rest.
I'm a teacher and I work in two buildings. I'm new to both buildings and haven't really developed ANY relationships at my AM building b/c I come to work, set up, teach, and leave for my PM building. I'm planning on telling my principal around 12 weeks and he can do what he wants with the info, but I would feel uncomfortable making an announcement. At my PM school, I'll tell my principal and a few close co-workers, but also - no announcement.
Hell yes, it is your news to announce!! I suggest telling your boss something like "thank you for the offer to announce, but I would prefer to gradually tell the people at work I am close to first and let the news get out that way". And then just ask her not to say anything to anyone while you do that. I had a somewhat similar situation where, after we told our mother-in-law, she said to my DH "when can I tell your grandma?" and he flat-out told her it was his news and he wanted to tell his grandma himself. I think his mom was disappointed, but she understood. I think it's just important to make sure you are clear with your boss that you will tell in your own way.
Good luck!!!
