S/O school food- what did you eat in school, if you remember?

After looking at the menu for my local district i got to thinking about what I used to choose.

I remember in early elementary I packed a lunch- usually was PB&J, some chips and a little debbie cake, I'd buy a (plain) milk at school.

In 5th I started buying the lunch there and it was whatever they had- I have fond memories of fiestata and corn day. lol!

In middle school (7-9)I remember I would either get a plate of fries and a chocolate milk, or brownie and choclate milk (yes, that;s all!) I'd save up some money from lunch because we got a 'break' before last class (have no clue why??) and I would get a soda from the vending machine (WTH were we doing having coke machines in school!?!)

In HS (10-12), we had pizza hut pizza brought in and you could buy it by the slice- I bought that most days in 10th grade along with a bottled water. In 11th I would go between that or fries- sometimes a real meal (fiestata day!). In 12th I would buy with 2 chocolate milks as my lunch or a small bag of popcorn and a bottle water.

I sure hope my kids make better choices than I did!

  • Elementary school: Pizza day! Elio's pizza and it was gross, but I loved it. And these butterscotch cookies...

High school: Rosa, the woman who made breakfast for us in high school, would 'fry' bagels in butter. omg. amazing.

I grew up in an Italian area so we often went to our neighborhood Italian deli for lunch. Everything was good. I often had "wedges" (a hot sandwich, like a hot meatball sandwich).

  • Elementary School: always brought, usually pb&j on whole wheat (child of a hippie here lol!)

Middle School: always brought. After 2 years of non sales (6-7 meals sold in the school year) our school stopped offering lunch entirely. They had pb&j for people who forgot their lunch.

High School: combos in between classes because I took extra classes (drama, band and choir, not academic lol) and skipped lunch entirely.

  • I had a PBJ pretty much every day between K and 8th grade. Usually with a piece of fruit and something for dessert-- HoHos, homemade cookies, Little Debbie.

I may have had a hot lunch every once in a while, but not so often that I remember.

  • I have no clue what I brought to school in Elementary!! I do remember buying lunch with it was pancake and sausage day!

middle school/high school. We had vending machines in the cafeteria but they were turned off during lunch. There was always pizza and fries and something else, spaghetti, chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes and gravy. Always salad bar and you could always buy fruit. Tuesdays was taco salad bar. Sometime during high school they added the frozen yogurt machine. We could also get yogurt and milk. I don't think there was juice. Oh, Mexican pizza too. Most kids got fries, the mexican pizza and the taco salad bar.  Oddly enough in high school, I usually got the salad! Sometimes it was coke and french fries!

  • I always brought my lunch in elementary school, although I have no idea what I brought!

In high school, I always ate traveling tacos.. a taco with the fixings in a doritios bag.  Yummy!   I could go for one now!  LOL  I would occasionally get a chicken patty on a bun, chicken nuggets or pizza.  Now that I think about it, they were usually disgusting!

  • In elementary school I usually bought lunch unless it was spaghetti, beefaroni or fish (things that I still don't prefer to eat). In middle school it was either whatever they had in the cafeteria or I'd skip lunch and eat the pita bread from my friend's lunch. She never ate what she brought. I'm not sure why we ate like birds, but I know it wasn't on purpose. I had a crazy metabolism (weighed 100 pounds or less until I was in my early 20's).

9th grade, I ate Lance Toastchee crackers nearly every day. After that, it was usually fries or pizza and a cookie. By 12th grade we were allowed to leave for lunch, so it was usually a hot dog, Wendy's or fried rice from the local Chinese place. Honestly, the choices I made were complete crap, but I'd still probably eat that way if I was still that thin. Life without rules and health concerns was a lot more fun! I'd be sick the rest of the day if I ate that kind of crap for lunch now.

  • My mom used to pack me bologna & butter sandwiches.  After she died, I had to buy every day.  I never minded school food, though - pizza, mystery meat, whatever.  I don't remember much of it, though I know I bought a frozen lemon icee thing almost every day.  By high school, I either ordered a cheesesteak sub (steakumm, basically, with bread and a little cheese and ketchup) and fries every day, or I brought the little single serving size of ravioli or something similar.  Somehow, I ate like that and sometimes even 2 dinners if I went to a friend's before going home, and I was still skinny!  Now I eat healthy stuff and keep gaining!

  • My mom packed my lunch all the way through high school. The same thing the entire time; a sandwich of some type (ham, turkey, meatloaf, pbj) on whole wheat and a piece of fruit.  Milk came with me in the thermos. Once in a great while I got something extra with it like a single cookie or chips. I bought in elementary maybe twice a year on hamburger day. I never bought in jr. high. In high school I would toss my mom's lunch and buy a pack of sugared donuts from the vending machine or sneak off campus to get frozen yogurt. The few times I bought I got a salad.

  • Until HS I only brought my lunch a handfull of times.  Our hot lunches were really rather well balanced...  Main/meat dish (sandwich, spaghetti, pizza-rarely, ham patty, pizza patties), baked hash browns, veggie, fruit cocktail/canned fruit, and some sort of small dessert (carrot cake, spice cake, etc.)... Then limited condiments to go along with the above

Now it's as if the regulations have taken the common sense out of the mix such that the lunch ladies hardly have anything to work with..

  • my mom was a teacher and she was "too busy" most mornings to make lunches for us, so we ALWAYS had hot lunches.

In grade school, I can specifically remember the spaghetti, which I hated, the "sauce" was sooo watery it had no flavor...and the garlic bread was usually crunchy and gross.  I also remember the melanamine or plasticy trays that we had, now they have styrofoam and throw them away every day.  I LOVED pizza day...nothing better than rectangle shaped pizza with a solid layer of grease on the top (blech, I do not think I could eat it today!)

In jr. high, about 90% of the time I ate the sandwich combo..it was either a hamburger, cheeseburger or chicken sandwich (depending on the day) with french fries and chocolate or vanilla shake.  SOOO unhealthy.

In highschool, we had less choices then jr. high...I don't remember a lot about highschool, except that starting our Junior year we had the option to  leave campus to eat lunch, and we at 50% of the time at Burger King and 50% of the time at Taco Bell the last 2 years of highschool.  On occasion, if we had extra money, we'd go to Arby's for a treat.  I can't really eat Burger King or Taco Bell anymore.

  • I packed in elementary school, but bought on Friday - Pizza Day!

Jr. High - I bought - usually consisted of chips and soda from the vending machine and I usually rounded it out with an apple

High School - bagel with cream cheese and then we would buy Andy Capps hot fries we would dip in our cream cheese.

Jr year - they started serving nachos

Sr. year - we got a salad bar

  • K-6 I usually took cold lunch.  A sandwich, little debbie, juice box or milk.

Hot lunch which i sometimes took was something equally non-nutritious.

7-12 I helped in the school cafeteria so I would get hot lunch for free.  Mostly junk food, chicken patties and fries or the like.  But I did get white milk:)

I would often get a snack, candy bar or cookies at the school store as well.

My parents really were not, and frankly still are not big on nutrition and eating a balanced diet.

  • I don't remember much of elementary but I know I brought all of 5th grade. Jr. high I remember having pizza and fry choices besides the hot meal. There may have been a small salad bar. High school we had a taco salad/nachos bar, sub sandwich bar, salad bar, pizza, fries, chicken patties, hamburgers/cheeseburgers. For drinks we had the classic milks but also had juice coolers with things like Fruitopia in it. My husband (we are high school sweethearts) used to eat 2 chicken patties and 1 large fry with a strawberry fruitopia every day. I liked to switch it up.
  • I brought lunch basically every day throughout my entire school career.  In Elementary it was usually a sandwich with fruit and some type of dessert type thing with juice or milk.  We also had snack in the classroom with milk and a snack type thing that people would bring in.  My grandma was also a retired lunch lady (She retired just before I started kindergarten) so I knew all of the lunch ladies and they would often buy me an icecream bar or something :-)

In Middle school I always had a nutrigrain bar (which now I will not let my kids eat!!) with some fruit and a juice.

High school I don't really remember.  I know I did not buy, that was nasty food.  And in junior and senior year we would have Music Theory class during lunch period so every other Friday we would order a sheet pizza from the local place for everyone to share.

One of the many reasons I am happy to homeschool.  I get to make my kids lunch every day and know what they eat!!

  • I always packed some type of sandwich, fruit, cookies and chocolate milk in grade school.

I only bought on pizza or fiestada day.

In high school, I usually ate pasta, fruit and veggies for lunch.

I am Turkey Lurkey... b/c it sounded better than Cocky-Locky.
  • In elementary school, I took lunch - PB&J pretty much every single day. I probably had small bag of chips with it, fruit, and a small dessert (like a cookie) and bought milk at school.

I bought "lunch" most of the time in middle and high school, but they had lots of snack type foods. I didn't even go through the real lunch line - just went through the snack line, usually, and got total crap like french fries, hostess mini donuts, etc. The real lunch food was nasty.

  • K-8, small Catholic school, no cafeteria. We had "hot lunches" on Fridays that was usually a Taco Bell taco or small McD's burger. I rarely got to do hot lunch; it was .50, don't know if my parents didn't like me having fast food or it was the $$. I brought my lunch nearly everyday, and in the winter (brutal here in CA!) my dad would make me spahgetti-o's in a thermos.

9-12, Catholic high school w/ 500 students. Had a lunch lady but no cafeteria; we could get burritos, which were fantastic, or packaged snack food. I mostly brought my lunch because I couldn't afford $5/day for lunch. As seniors we could go off campus, and I did that a lot to get cheap Taco Bell. My parents didn't give me lunch $, seeing as they were paying my tuition and we always had plenty of food in the house to make a lunch.

  • In elementary and middle school, we actually went home for lunch each day!

In high school, I would have a sandwich (PB or tuna, usually) along with some kind of chips and a diet coke or chocolate milk. If I didn't bring a sandwich, I'd buy a hot dog. We didn't have a cafeteria; we had a "canteen".
