Where do/did you get inspiration for names?

I know family names and traditions are important for some you, but anything else?

  • Family, books and one TV show.

I think the baby name board is helpful too.

  • One of my favorite girl names came from an obscure music artist and also I have heard another girl name for years but never liked it until I found out I was pregnant. I had two girl names picked out and...I found out I am having a boy! haha that's so typical of my luck lol

  • DH and I agreed on our names without a fight, only took us a couple hours of brainstorming to find the names we liked.  Before we set our choices in stone I would read through movie credits.  I would scan all the names and see if I liked any better than the names we chose.

  • Red Sox player names (no joke) plus family names.  We're very big Sox fans.Big Smile

And I also scan movie credits just to make sure I don't miss out on a good name. :)

  • For our boy name I used DH's and my middle names - William Hayden.

As for our girl name we picked out the name after seeing it on a headstone.  We were at the cemetery to tend the flowers on my grandparents headstone.  Walking back to the car I noticed a woman's headstone and her first name caught my eye.  I mentioned it to DH and we stood there for a minute and decided that would be our girl name.  It's a nice classic name and has a built in nickname (also happens to be a name in a book series we love) so it was perfect.

So kind of morbid but if you want to find a great classic or older, less used name it's a great place to look.  My hometown is 300+ years old so there are a lot of unique names but not the scary bad ew-nikee one you see these days.

  • Right before my SO asked me to marry him, I was reading a book about pioneers. The last story I read was about a man named Elkanah. I just kind of kept that one in my back pocket until we got pregnant. (Two years later...)

J didn't care for it much at first until we discovered there was a notable character of American history named Elkanah who shares J's last name. For some reason, this made him like it more.

I swore I wouldn't chose any bible names, but since he's such an obscure character (and 98% of the people I've shared it with have no idea where it's from) I made an exception.

Of course, I still have my ears open for any other contenders...

  • Mainly just books. I'm an English Literature major so I get my inspiration for most everything from books it seems =P

  • Dead kings/queens in Europe.  I like classic, vanilla English first names because our last name is oh so very English.

  • Her first name is honoring my grandma.

Her middle name is from my favorite story (NOT TWILIGHT. Hahaha.) and also it has a significance from my husband's family.

  • This is the lamest answer ever, but they just came to me.  Our boy name before we were even pregnant.  And our girl name while laying on the couch reading a book one day.  DH didn't like either of them at first but came back to me weeks later came back and said they grew on him.

The middle names are all family names.

  • Both of my kids names came from hearing other moms yell for their kids at daycare and playgrounds. We used middle names from my Grandparents and ended up with Avery Ann and Charlotte "Charlie" Lynn.

  • I've been kind of panicking about names, as we have NO ideas that we can agree on.

I work at a HUGE company, and so today I was browsing through my Outlook address book.... talk about desperation. Too bad it was full of Michael, John, and Daniel.... not that those are bad names.. just not for me!

  • Honestly I just go with what I like, which tends towards more traditional/classic names. The middle name will be a family name.
  • Madelyn Kay--  We just liked Madelyn. Kay is mine and my mom's middle name.

Liam Prentice-- We just liked Liam. Prentice is my husband's middle name.

DH liked Liam, but he was really sold when I told him what it means: Strong, protector.   That's exactly the type of boy that my husband would love to have, because that's how he is too. :)

  • Selah Grace -- Biblical reference to Psalms and we just loved Grace and it  worked with Selah

Asher John -- Both biblical references... however, John is family name... DH middle name and BOTH grandpa's first name

I just can't wait to actually find out which one it will be!!!
