s/o x-mas...

How does seeing family usually play out?  do you have to travel a lot?

We already told people if they want to come to our house they can.  I'm going to have a 2 1/2 week old, so they can all KISS IT!  haha!

Re: s/o x-mas...

  • I'm in Buffalo and my family is in Syracuse.  We've been here 5 years

We started travelling and staying in a hotel for a few days, including Christmas and making the rounds to my Mom & Dad, Dad & Step-Mom and grandma.  The second year we ended up staying 3 nights in a hotel with a toddler.  It was expensive and rediculous...plus we weren't home for Christmas morning.

We decided that my son spending Christmas morning at his house was important to us.  So, we coordinated the weekend after Christmas, fitting everything in.

The 2 years ago I was too close to delivery to travel.  (Syracuse would have been out of network and would have cost us a fortune if I went into labor early!)  So, everyone came to us.

We did go back to Syracuse the weekend after Christmas last year.  And I'm hoping that DH gets a job in Syracuse soon so we can move back and then it won't be an issue.

  • Ever since my husband and I started celebrating holidays together which was about 6/7 years ago we have alternated Thanksgiving and Christmas. One year Thanksgiving with my family then Christmas with his, then next year vice versa. My family lives in NYC and we're in WNY.

With the baby now I think we will change it to every third year so that we can have christmas and thanksgiving at our own home once every third year. I'm really hoping that I can convince my family to come up one year for Christmas so we can have a big 'ol celebration together! :)

I'll be 5 months pregnant during Christmas so we'll be traveling to spend Christmas with my family this year. However, since the ILs are down South now we won't be flying to spend Thanksgiving with them this year. Just can't afford it with the baby coming and the new house we just bought.

  • Since we've been married we've done Thanksgiving with my family (who all live in MD) and Christmas with DH's family who live here in Syracuse.  There are a few reasons: it's easier to travel in November than December weather-wise, DH's family used to go to FL for Thanksgiving so they weren't here anyway, and my family is not religious at all and DH and I are and like to go to church and celebrate Christ's birth at Christmas as opposed to just Santa.

BUT if I had a 2 1/2 week old people would travel here or we wouldn't see them, end of story.

  • I forgot to add that normally we have to travel to my mom's side of the family the weekend before christmas, then do x-mas with my mom, dad and sisters family seperate on christmas day, all while finding time for DH's mom's side, then his dad, then his step-mom (they are divorced), and my dad's side of the family.  It's TOO MUCH!  and Liam was miserable by the end of the weekend last year.  Then we all got sick the following week.  I'm really looking forward to not diong anything this year and just hanging out.
  • My parents are divorced so we've always celebrated with my dad on Christmas eve then my mom on Christmas day. Since I've been with DH we've done christmas eve at my dads, Christmas morning with his family and then visit my mom in evening. Now with Tori, we still do my dads Christmas eve, then Christmas morning at home. Then to my ILs for the morning. We visit my mom for a bit (ILs & my mom live 5 miles apart) and back to ILs for dinner with DHs family. It's a whirlwind, but doable since we're so close.
  • My ILs live next door and my family is about 25 minutes away.  A few years ago we started celebrating with my family on Christmas Eve.  We go to the ILs Christmas morning for gifts and breakfast then to DHs Grandparents (who live right down the road) for gifts and dinner.  We usually make it to my parents for dessert in the late afternoon/evening.  But we will always be home on Christmas morning with the girls.

  • My side:  My mom and aunt split holidays - one does christmas, and one does thanksgiving.  They both live about 5/10 minutes from us - so perfect!  They hold it on the day of.  I just bring a side.  There are about 40 pteople that come.  Since having dd, we have also had just my parents and sister (and this year her husband) over on Christmas eve after our church service to exchange gifts among us.

DH's side: BIL&SIL alternate with us holidays.  One does CHristmas and one does thanksgiving.  DH's side lives about an hour away.  We usually do it the Sunday before or after the actual holiday (since DH works Sat and SIL's family also celebrates the day of).  But just this summer BIL&SIL moved about 5 hours away.  Sooooo, I'm thinking we will be hosting all holidays.  They are due with twins in January, so I'm positive they won't be coming for Christmas, but not sure if they will for Thanksgiving.  I wouldn't want to make the drive, but her parents live here too, so maybe they will.  DH thinks it will be too much to have Christmas here, and wants to skip it.  But if we don't, then his parents and grandma won't do anything.  So as it gets closer, if I feel like it will be too much or DH doesn't come around, I will probably push to all meet at a restaurant so we at least get together.  I would rather do that than nothing.  DD already hardly sees that side of the family.

  • Before DD, we used to travel to Philly for either Thanksgiving or Christmas, and do the other holiday here with my family. Lately we have invited his parents here instead of going there, b/c their house is full of clutter and I get anxiety attacks just setting foot in there. I wonder when they will figure out why we don't visit anymore.
  • WE are not seeing DH's side at all for xmas. This is an insane situation and has me pissed.

My side we will go to vermont to see the weekend before xmas then my parents are coming down xmas eve and staying til monday. :) This is the first time EVER and they've never both stayed at the same time!!

  • we do thanksgiving with our albany family (friends who are like family)- I Love thanksgiving - it's my favorite everybody (the kind everybody celebrates) holiday

we do xmas eve with DHs family- they are about 30 minutes from us and then we do xmas morning at home before hoping into the car and heading to my family's in binghamton (2 hours)....

not sure how the holidays will play out this year- since the giants are playing on xmas eve and so are the cowboys and at my inlaws my BIL rules the tv- which means the cowboys game will be on and dh wont want to watch that...LOL

  • It's a whirlwind...we leave here xmas eve morning to go to buffalo-have to see my Dad then my Mom then drive back to Roc at night.

Xmas day will hopefully be here in the morning then to my ILs for dinner.  Its 24hrs of chaos

  • We are lucky in that both families live relatively close, with the exception of my Dad.  A's baptism is a few weeks before Christmas so we will celebrate with my Dad then.  Christmas Eve night is with my Mom and sister, they usually go to church with us and then sometimes my Mom spends the night.  I like to have Christmas morning with just us (or with my Mom), and then in the afternoon we go to the ILs.  We do Grandparents in the weekends before.  DH sometimes has to work Christmas, but we have been lucky the past 2 years.
