Is it ok to lose weight when TTC?

I'd like to lose a few pounds to offset any pregnancy weight.  Is this a bad thing to do?

Re: Is it ok to lose weight when TTC?

  • More and more OB's are saying it's ok to lose weight during a pregnancy if you are obese. So I don't think it would be horrible to lose while TTC. I didn't know I was pregnant until 10-05, but had conceived 9-16 (LMP 09-01), and I dieted, and did all the bad things you shouldn't do (except smoking, drugs) -- lots of women has oopsy pregnancies and diet, and their LO's turn out perfect. I've also been told that you do not need extra calories until the second trimester (I think this was from WTE). I stopped trying to lose once I found out I was pg b/c it was really just vanity pounds - I was w/in a healthy weight range.

But omg did I gain during my pregnancy! If this is going to be your first, I recommend to try and stay in the 25-35 lb wt gain...I'm going to be working this off for a year :(

  • It should be perfectly fine as long as you're doing it in a healthy way.

  • I think if you are making healthy lifestyle changes then yes, it is ok.  I have always been pretty healthy but once we decided to ttc, I kicked it in high gear. I cut out a lot of processed foods and all pop.  I packed my lunches and worked out 5 days a week.  I lost weight and toned up and then found out I was pregnant.  I gained a lot while I was pregnant but it was easier to take it off afterwards because I knew how to make healthy choices.

  • Fantastic!  Thanks everyone.  Good to know that it can still be ok if done in a healthy way!

  • Some things you might consider are: swapping for more fresh, whole foods; increasing your vegetable intake; decreasing your refined sugar intake; increasing your water intake.  There are lots of great ways to be healthier that are also fabulous for your little one.  :)
  • It should be fine unless your issues with TTC are bodyfat or hormone related. For instance, I had low bodyfat and hadn't seen AF for 3 years, so I was advised to not workout when TTC to get bodyfat up and allow the hormones from treatments to circulate better...however, if your hormone levels and bodyfat levels are normal talk to your doctor but you should be ok.
