Baby Vick's on their feet?

Audrey woke up last night very congested, more so than usual.  I'm taking her to the pedi today for her reflux follow up and plan on asking him, but I'm wondering if the old Vick's on the feet trick worked for any of you.  Is she too young to try it?  And has anyone used the Vick's plug ins?  Stella has a runny nose and cough so I thought about picking one of those up for her room.  TIA!

  • yep, I've done it for Evan and it does work well. I don't know if she's too young or not though.

hope she is feeling better soon!

  • I do the vicks on the feet, not sure how well it works or what age to start. I do love the Pedicare vapor plug though! Their website has a $1 coupon to print too. We use it for the duration of a cold, a new pad every night. It has a night light, we don't use one so I covered the light part with electrical tape...blocked it right out!
  • My trick is to put some apple cider vinegar in the humidifier (with water) and run it all night.  The room will stink but it works.  Apple cider vinegar is a natural antibiotic.  You can also buy Eucalyptus Essential Oil and put 6-12 drops in the tank with the water and run the humidifier.  It'll help clear her out and eucalyptus helps babies to sleep.
  • We use the Vicks plug in when Rosie has a cold, it works great and then she doesn't smell like Vicks for the day!
  • We do a bath before bed with Soothing Vapors soap, J&J makes it but there are generic brands too.  Then we use the vapor plug-ins with a vaporizer.  Those usually really help.  Adult Vicks should never be used on babies or kids and there is no reason to put baby Vicks on their feet, it isn't absorbed into the skin.  It works from being smelled.  Put it where the medicine says to put it.

That was kind of snarky!  Nobody said they were using adult vicks!  The title of the post says BABY Vicks!  Haven't you ever heard people say to put Vicks on your feet if you have a chest cold??  Our pediatrician even recommended we put BABY Vicks on DS's FEET before.

  • I think she does have a point though about following instructions-

Vicks website says for babies 3+ months- and for chest, neck and back - and to "use only as intended"

    https://www.vicks.com/products/childrens-medicine/babyrub-ointment/

Obviously a pedi could have input on it too.. but I have heard to not use any essential oils on babies under 3m anyway, so I wouldn't do it.

Regular old adult Vicks says that too.  People still use it on their feet.  Plain and simple, it's one of those things that people believe works and will continue to do.  Everyone you talk to will have different opinions.  With anything, talk to a pediatrician and make your own decision after considering all facts.  You should never use straight essential oils on any infant.  My suggestion was not to put it on their skin...only in the humidifier.  Sorry if that wasn't clear.

  • I didn't mean it as snarky.  I meant it as fact.  The old Vicks on Feet trick was originally brought about because they didn't make baby Vaporub and regular Vicks Vaporub can KILL babies and young children, more likely just cause breathing problems.  I meant it more as a warning.  Don't believe me that you should follow the packaging instruction and that babies and young kids have DIED from using Vicks incorrectly?  Google it.

Your warning is fine however nobody ever suggested using regular vicks on a child!
