My first bump MIL vent!

Well, first I'll say that usually I have a pretty good relationship with MIL. Today, however, she has gone overboard, and I am upset. About a month ago, she said her SO knew someone who could make seat cushions for our glider rocker. Great! That would be awesome! So, DH took measurements of the chair and sent them to her. She then said, the person would like to do the measurements themself. WTF? But, ok. So DH drives the rocker and ottoman all the way to her house. Fast forward 3wks and she says the person hasn't called them back so she might just buy some cushions herself for it. Not necessary, we were planning to buy some ourselves, but I think she felt bad that the person fell through on sewing them. I also wanted to pick out the fabric myself too if the lady had sewn them. So today, she sends me a text of a picture of fabric and says, "What do you think about the color?" Huh? So apparently the lady did come through. I told her it was a really dark and where is she?(I wanted to come and look at fabric with her.) She says she is at home. So I said, I wanted to come with her when she buys it to make sure. She says she already bought it and they are already being made!! My vent is not that I am ungrateful that she wanted to get the cushions for us, but that she just took it upon herself to pick out a color and buy the fabric when we were willing to buy it ourselves and now I am just going to have to live with it? Frustrated! I really shouldn't stress about it, this to shall pass. Sorry to vent, but of course my DH won't say anything against his momma.

Re: My first bump MIL vent!

  • I'd be pretty irritated too. The good thing is that you can still buy ones that you like if you don't like the look of it, something could always "happen" to the ones that are being made. At least your MIL didn't take it upon herself to buy you something that has been deemed unsafe and expect you to use it.

Apparently my MIL bought a used drop-side crib that she expects us to go pick up and use...*sigh*...don't know how I'm going to deal with this one.

Funny, because actually my own mom did that! She even bought it a year before we got pregnant and expected us to store it! Once we were pregnant, and I realized they were unsafe, I actually told her that we wouldn't be using it blahblah, and she was ok with it. She just didn't know they are banned now. However, she did take the crib back to her house, and actually sold it to her neighbor who has a 6month old. She said, they were just going to put screws through where it won't drop anymore. Um, wow mom!

Ha!  My FIL wanted to give us my husband's old crib (my husband is 39 by the way) and when I said that they have different regulations now for cribs so we were planning on buying a new one, he called all the regulations "propaganda". Riiiiight.

He also scoffed when we told him that we didn't want our baby around second hand smoke (my MIL smokes like a chimney).

    Ah, in-laws...

  • Scary, I've just been on a couple of sites to determine what the "fix" is for some of these. I'm not sure which brand it is yet (still haven't picked it up) so I forwarded the articles to my phone for when I do see it, including the model numbers and such. I don't know whether it will be salvageable or not, apparently there are kits for some of these to convert them....dunno :( In the mean time, I do have a bassinet and a Pack and Play as options.

Wow! That's going to be fun to deal with! Yes, we survived second-hand smoke (or mothers that smoked while pregnant) and a whole slew of horribly unsafe toys (lawn darts?), but that doesn't mean that we shouldn't take every precaution possible with our LO's.

Yes, some do have kits. Ours didn't though. So these neighbors have just rigged up the crib and who knows if it is safe?!

  • That's annoying.  It's always unfortunate when a "gift" makes you go out of your way and complicates your life :(

I really don't know what they were thinking, although my DH mentioned something to the same effect (I just kind of groaned at him) about "fixing" the side. The problem with these is not exactly that the sides can move, it has to do with the additional space between the side and the bottom of the crib, I guess. I hope that the six month old is two large to really be at risk with this, but it is horrible to think about.

  • Ahh yes, this is one of my MIL's signature moves. And it's frustrating as hell. Either she's coming from a place of guilty conscience about the delay in organization, or she's just exerting some control because she feels she's lost it in some other situation. Bottom line is she's done something you don't want, and is expecting you to live with looking at something you don't like, and you probably feel really awkward about not using it when LO arrives or telling her you just don't like it. The old me would've put up with it because I didn't want to upset her, or cause a rift between DH and her, but the new me has learnt that it doesn't do any favours to just let it go. For me, MIL has just become worse and now does completely unacceptable things... (You should've seen the eff-up that was our wedding cake!!) I think you should be honest and say something, and if she respects you, then she will listen. Explain to DH and then he can help fan any flames that she bears afterwards. This is super-frustrating for you, and I'm sorry it's happened.

Gahh!! It is so frustrating. I just now asked her why she didn't tell me that the plan changed and atleast let me ok it first. She insists that I will love them, and they are just a little darker. (They are waaay dark, and the nursery is brighter, lighter colors.)

  • She sounds just like my MIL. They are completely present when you have these conversations (phone or  in-person) with them but they don't frickin' listen. AARRGGHH! I reckon it's time to chat to DH and decide whether you guys want 'pick this battle' and tell her you don't want them, or whether you just want to accept them, pack them away and buy the ones you really want. If she gets her nose out of joint when she comes over and sees the new ones, then that's her issue.
  • a little off topic but where were you planning on buying new cushions? if you have any recs for places online i'd love to check out the links. thanks! (we were given an old glider but they have denim cushions that i'm not a big fan of).

These are the ones I have been looking at. My rocker was free, so this will be no big deal to purchase for $70.
