if you have a 3rd row in your car

can you use a car seat back there? I have a Toyota Highlander and my two kids are in the captain chairs in second row. But I was wondering if my niece who is rear facing could be in the third row or if that is a no-no.

We have a family function this weekend so was thinking of carpooling if possible.

thanks!

  • You can, but what seat is it? It's pretty hard to install a lot of seats back there.

  • She is in an Evenflo convertible.

My kids have the Graco Nautilus, is it any easier to get those back there?

  • I don't think I've ever had luck installing a nautilus back there (that's one of the seats my FIL has in his car). You may be able to get the evenflo back there, as long as you get it really upright.

  • Ok. I might have to do a trial at it before saturday then. Thanks E!

  • Do you happen to have any convertible seats left at your house? There may be one that I know installs easier back there.

  • I have tethers and latches back there, so we have put car seats back there before.

I don't think so. My mom has a convertile in her car but if I remember correctly it's probably one of the same ones we have.

Interesting. My FIL's does not have any in the third row (it's a fold down--are they not all fold down?).

think it depends on the car.  I have an MDX with 3rd row that folds down with latches in the seat and anchors for the tether.  But, they're still safe without it, right?  As long as the seat fits ok?

  • They are safe without it, but I really wouldn't want my kid in an untethered nautilus. Some seats I'm cool leaving untethered if necessary...not sure about the nauti.

  • I've used the third row in our Highlander before with car seats. However, I would not put a rear facing there because it is too hard to get the kid in and out. There is so little room in the third row! Can you put one of your forward facing kids there and put the rear facing in the second row?

  • We have a Tahoe.  We put R's seat back there quite often if we have an extra person riding with us.  I put her booster back there because it is a million times easier to get in because you just have the seatbelt to deal with.

I don't see a reason why you couldn't put her back there.  It may just be a pain to get her in and out.

  • Hmmm, I just might have to do some moving around.
