pooping while sleeping

Hey guys, I'd like some advice on this.

DS has been pooping a lot recently; he might be having a stomach thing. What's especially bothersome about it is that he poops overnight and wakes up screaming. DS is a pain in the butt during diaper changes normally (very squirmy, etc) and this is compounded to a ridiculous level overnight (screams during the whole thing and is impossible to keep still). With poop involved, it takes both me and DH to change those overnight diapers. And then of course it takes forever for all three of us to fall back asleep. The other problem is that DS has diaper rash now. Sometimes we don't catch the poops right away, and moreover he is going often enough that it's hard to protect against rash regardless. And as part of the diapering squirmy issues he has, it is hard to get cream on him (though I do it every time now).

I'm wondering if anyone has any advice to address any of these issues. What foods should he eat? Should he just nurse more instead (in addition)? What foods should he avoid? Any tips on how to deal with crazy diaper changes more easily? Any tips on how to make his rashy butt feel better? I know going diaperless is an option but I don't feel like I have a safe place to put him for that (i.e. there isn't that wide of an area in our apartment that is capable of withstanding pee & poop and he loves to wander around...also he is in daycare most of the time so he'll have to be wearing a diaper.)

Thanks!

Re: pooping while sleeping

  • I have noticed taht foods with higher acid make Avery get diaper rash in a hot minute! Things like pasta sauce, etc.

For diaper changes, I know this probably isnt' an option but we always put sesame street on. (i dont know if that will help in the middle of the night) but he is a limp noodle when Elmo is on.

For his diaper rashes, I avoid using wipes (I use warm washcloths) let him completely dry out, change every hour when awake to keep him as dry as possible, and use Desitin like CRAZY. With all of that, he usually clears up within 24 hours. I have also heard to use baking soda in the bath.

  • Oh, that sucks.  J squirms a lot during changes too.  Usually the only thing he will play with is something he normally doesn't get.  Sometimes it is the lotion bottle or the nasal spray, whatever works at the time.  Lately he's been using a mirror that came off his old play gym thing.

I know you are probably already doing that, but that's all the advice I have.  I really hope someone has better advice for you.

  • Try following the BRAT diet, bananas, rice, applesauce and toast.  Give him bland foods to let his system settle down a bit and they're also easier on the way out.  Rice will bind him up a little bit if it's too soft.  If you need to get protein in him try boiled chicken or cottage cheese.  Also some yogurt with probiotics would be a good idea if he has the runs.  Good luck.
