So Wednesday at my weekly appointment I mentioned how I had been itching really badly for a couple of days. Being the paranoid googler that I am, I diagnosed myself with cholestasis of pregnancy since I had more than one symptom. This is a condition where your gallbladder stops working properly due to pregnancy hormones and bile builds up in your blood. My OB collected my blood at that appointment and told me the tests take 4-5 days to come back. She said she would call me as soon as the results were in and if they were positive, they would induce me probably the next day. So I figured there was a good chance they would come back on Monday and I might have to go back Tuesday for an induction.

I spent the weekend trying to get baby stuff ready just in case. Sunday night I put Sean to bed and started folding yet another load of laundry when I got a call from my doctor at 9:30. She said she got my results back in and they were high. She told me to come in ASAP and they were going to induce me. ?So, like first thing in the morning?? I ask her. ?No,? she says, ?I need you to come in tonight.? Commence freak out! I called my dad to come stay at our house with Sean-he is a little over an hour away-and started frantically packing my bag.

We got to the hospital and checked in at about 11:45 pm Sunday night.  Then they started my induction. No cervadil or anything?.just pitocin since I was already 2 cm. FYI-Induction kinda sucks. Just sitting there in the bed attached to an IV dealing with pitocin contrax is not my idea of fun. I would have much rather labored at home. However as a potential complication of cholestasis is stillbirth, you can understand why I got induced.

At about 3:30 or 4 I was getting uncomfortable regular contractions while DH snoozed peacefully on the pull out couch he deemed ?too uncomfortable to sleep on?. By 8:30 am I was at 5 cm and my OB was like ?we need to get this baby out-I?m breaking your water.? Remembering how quickly my labor progressed when they did this with Sean, I requested an epidural. Just as I predicted, after my water was broken I went from pretty uncomfortable to horrible almost unbearable contractions. I got the epi about 30 minutes later thankfully, and I was able to relax a little bit. However, the epi did not completely take. I could still feel about 40% of my right side. But at least it took the edge off.

By about 11:30 am I felt intense pressure in my lower back and hip way down low. The nurse checked me and was like ?whoa-he is right there. Let me call your doctor. Don?t push!? My OB ran over from her office while they set up the 10,000 watt stadium light and stirrups.  I had a contraction and started pushing-his head was out. Second contraction, his body was out. Done!!

Blake was 8 pounds 3 oz and had near perfect apgars?..he looked absolutely tiny compared to my 9 pound 4 oz Sean though! Poor thing got his face bruised and broken capillaries in his eyes from coming down the birth canal so quickly. But he is doing well and figured out nursing right away. And Sean loves him! Here is a pic. Thanks if you have read all this! **sorry for formatting!**

  • Congratulations Carrie!! I'm so glad everything went well! He is adorable and as I said on FB, he looks so much like Sean! Caelan had facial bruising too, but from being in the birth canal for too long.

  • Congratulations!  He is precious!  So glad your OB was so proactive and everything turned out well.

(And can I say that despite having to be induced and an epi that didn't totally take [which I totally feel for you on, b/c mine didn't either and they had to redo it as I was in transition], your "2 pushes and done" birth story makes me totally envious and hope for the same w/ my second LO?! :) )

  • go Mama!!!

  • O Carrie he is just precious!!!  He looks like a little peanut!

And what a crazy birth story!!  I had a friend develop the same complication and said the itching was unreal.

  • Blake is so adorable! Congratulations! I hope you're both doing well and everybody is adjusting happily.

And I totally know what you mean about an 8 lb baby looking tiny! C was 8 lbs 10 oz and still looked super tiny compared to L, who was the same size as Sean.
