Blake's birth story w/PIP-and PSA re itching!

Hi ladies! I know i didnt post much over here until I got in my 3rd trimester but i wanted to share my (long) birth story. FYI-if you are itching, please mention it to your OB and don't just chalk it up to pregnancy hormones! I had cholestasis which developed out of nowhere at almost 38 weeks and can be very dangerous for the baby. Sorry for any wonky formatting!

So Wednesday at my weekly appointment I mentioned how I had been itching really badly for a couple of days. Being the paranoid googler that I am, I diagnosed myself with cholestasis of pregnancy since I had more than one symptom. This is a condition where your gallbladder stops working properly due to pregnancy hormones and bile builds up in your blood. My OB collected my blood at that appointment and told me the tests take 4-5 days to come back. She said she would call me as soon as the results were in and if they were positive, they would induce me probably the next day. So I figured there was a good chance they would come back on Monday and I might have to go back Tuesday for an induction.

I spent the weekend trying to get baby stuff ready just in case. Sunday night I put DS to bed and started folding yet another load of laundry when I got a call from my doctor at 9:30. She said she got my results back in and they were high. She told me to come in ASAP and they were going to induce me. ?So, like first thing in the morning?? I ask her. ?No,? she says, ?I need you to come in tonight.? Commence freak out! I called my dad to come stay at our house with Sean-he is a little over an hour away-and started frantically packing my bag.

We got to the hospital and checked in at about 11:45 pm Sunday night.  Then they started my induction. No cervadil or anything?.just pitocin since I was already 2 cm. FYI-Induction kinda sucks. Just sitting there in the bed attached to an IV dealing with pitocin contrax is not my idea of fun. I would have much rather labored at home. However as a potential complication of cholestasis is stillbirth, you can understand why I got induced.

At about 3:30 or 4 I was getting uncomfortable regular contractions while DH snoozed peacefully on the pull out couch he deemed ?too uncomfortable to sleep on?. By 8:30 am I was at 5 cm and my OB was like ?we need to get this baby out-I?m breaking your water.? Remembering how quickly my labor progressed when they did this with DS, I requested an epidural. Just as I predicted, after my water was broken I went from pretty uncomfortable to horrible almost unbearable contractions. I got the epi about 30 minutes later thankfully, and I was able to relax a little bit. However, the epi did not completely take. I could still feel about 40% of my right side. But at least it took the edge off.

By about 11:30 am I felt intense pressure in my lower back and hip way down low. The nurse checked me and was like ?whoa-he is right there. Let me call your doctor. Don?t push!? My OB ran over from her office while they set up the 10,000 watt stadium light and stirrups.  I had a contraction and started pushing-his head was out. Second contraction, his body was out. Done!!

Blake was 8 pounds 3 oz and had near perfect apgars?..he looked absolutely tiny compared to my 9 pound 4 oz DS#1 though! Poor thing got his face bruised and broken capillaries in his eyes from coming down the birth canal so quickly. But he is doing well and figured out nursing right away. And DS#1 loves him! Here is a pic. Thanks if you have read all this!

  • Congratulations!  He is gorgeous!  I'm so glad you didn't wait to bring the itching to your doctor's attention.  I actually had that happen to me about 10 years ago as a side effect from birth control (ortho-tricyclen 28).  It's a long story, but I was jaundiced from head to toe, my blood was septic, and my liver was starting to shut down before any of the doctors could figure out what was wrong with me.  The itching was like nothing I have ever experienced.  I went through an ultrasound, catscan, and endoscope before a gastroenterologist in another state said my symptoms were form my bc pill.  I stopped taking it immediately, but it took months to get my body back to normal.  Very scary stuff.

Glad everyone is doing well and congrats again on your sweet baby boy!

  • Congratulations!  I'm glad everyone is doing well.

If you don't mind my asking, where was most of your itching?  My belly has been very itchy lately and I thought it was just due to my skin stretching.  Now I'm starting to wonder if its something else.

  • Congrats on little Blake!! He is absolutely precious!
  • What a cutie! Congratulations!

it was all over-even my palms and soles of my feet which is what tipped me off. with DS, I had the belly and leg itching too, but this was totally different. and it got worse at night and after I ate.

    thanks ladies!
