1st Trimester

Upset about 1st schedule Prenatal visit

I'm really disappointed about my upcoming visit.  My first prenatal appointment is two weeks from today and I'll be 8 weeks.  I really thought that my first visit would include an ultrasound so that I could actually see the baby and know that he/she is ok.  I just spoke to the office and they said it's just an appointment with the nurse to go over my history and family history.  Then I'll get a referral for radiology and lab work.  My DH and I took off that day and he's coming with me because I thought he'd get to see the baby.  Now I think he should just go to work because what's the point of him being there while I go over history information.  I'm really disappointed right now.  I hate waiting.

  • This is normal procedure for most ob's. I know it sucks to wait. No ultrasound or heartbeat until 10 weeks for my dr either. This is my second and I still have to go in at 8 weeks, I will tell DH to go to work as well.

  • I had a separate appointment for my first u/s too.  My doctor's office isn't equipped with a sonogram machine, so I go to a radiology office in a completely separate location for that.  I also go somewhere else entirely for my bloodwork.  It's not unusual, actually.

And, my doctor's office is in a hospital, but things are still separate.

You'll see your LO, don't worry.  I didn't ask my DH to come to my regular appointment, just the u/s.  It was definitely worth picking one over the other for him.

Waiting does suck, sometimes though, I understand.

  • That's normal. Be thankful you get an early ultrasound, a lot of people don't get one until the 20 week anatomy scan.

  • Yep.  I know it sucks, but that is pretty typical.  I was seen at 9w3d with this pregnancy (midwife) and last pregnancy I wasn't seen until almost 12 weeks (OB).
  • This is completely normal.  MH came with me to me to my family history visit, and I'm glad he did, because I found out about a family history of epilepsy I didn't know about previously.

  • I think that is pretty standard.  At my OB they don't schedule first appointments until 7-8 weeks.  My first appointment was also meeting with a nurse and going over history.  I did get an ultrasound in my 8th week but with my first pregnancy and different OB, I didn't have a first ultrasound until 10 weeks.  I hate waiting too though so I understand.

  • I know how you feel!! It was the same for me-- I actually have my first u/s today!  That is only because when my blood work came back they realized I was further along then we originally thought. My original u/s appt wasnt until 11/7!!

  • I just had my first appointment yesterday, with the nurse as well.  My husband didn't go either because we figured it would be a waste.  My next appointment is on 11/14 (10wks2days), so I'm praying for an ultrasound.  The nurse wasn't able to tell me if I'd get one or not, but my husband is going with me to that appointment, regardless.

  • Exactly how my appointment went and I was glad that my DH stayed at work.  It would have been a colossal waste of his time.  Sucks to have to wait but if you are healthy and young and there is no history of issues they will not have you come in unnecessarily.  My apt was at 7ish weeks and my next one will be at 12 weeks which they will listen to HB but still no u/s.  Only reason I am getting an u/s this week is because I have had bleeding, other then that I would be waiting until 20 weeks.

  • I know how you feel. My first appointment is when I am 9 weeks. They will just be taking a history, urine sample, and blood. Then I have to wait two more weeks to actually see my baby. It stinks, but it's pretty common. Hang in there!

hubby came to mine too.  i found out one of his nephews was born with 2 fingers that were still webbed together!
  • This is exactly what my OB said about my first appointment at 9w2d. DH is just going to stay at work and the come with me for the u/s.
We are all a little weird and life's a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours we join up with them and fall in mutual weirdness and call it love Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • this is normal for most OBs.  i go to a ginormous health clinic - my ob, internist, dermatologist, and all other specialists are all in the same building, seriously the place is the size of a hospital.  so i've been able to snag an ultrasound at every visit, because they have the equipment there.

  • You should be happy that you don't have a history that makes you need an ultrasound.

    I agree.

  • I'm a little confused by all of this -- I have my first "real" appointment today. I'm around 9 weeks, and already went in at 5 weeks to confirm that I was pregnant (she had me come in, checked urine and did blood tests / family history). I have no idea what they're doing today, but I called out of curiosity and they told me there is no u/s, but they would try to find a heartbeat. But then she told me my DH shouldn't come unless he wants to be incredibly bored. But a heartbeat!! I guess she feels like the chances of detecting this early are really low, but I think he'd be super bummed if we did hear something and he wasn't there. I told him all this and he said he still wants to come...we'll see! I guess there's nothing wrong with being too couple-y at the OB :)
  • My office won't see you until almost 10 weeks since there's nothing they can really do until then and we don't get an ultrasound until the anatomy scan at 18 weeks so just be glad you get an early scan at all.

  • Take your cell phone and record the audio for DH. Wink

Most visits are pretty boring (pee in a cup, weight check, measure uterus, talk to doc, doppler, give blood). With #1 I only had the NT u/s and that later 20w u/s. Regular doc visits included a doppler each time (they didn't have u/s available in the office).

Yes...be glad you don't HAVE to have more u/s. #2 has been a rockier road for us so far :(

  • That is how my first appointment was.  I just switched doctors and wasn't sure what to expect.  With my past pregnancies, my 1st appointment wasn't until 10 weeks, but at least at that time I could hear the heartbeat.  Now I have to wait until 12 weeks for my n/t scan to see if everything is okay.  The waiting is awful.  Hang in there, it will be here before you know it.
