what happened to my good eater?

ok seriously, overnight G went from a kid who would eat anything and eat as much as you put on his plate - to the kid who throws everything over the side of the high chair, cries as you feed him, and refuses to eat. he just finished getting over a somewhat "cold" - a little sore throat and a mild fever, but he seems to be over it now as of tuesday.

anyone else have this happen? what do you do? he literally just takes the food i put on his plate, and drops it onto the floor, piece by piece. WTF!

Re: what happened to my good eater?

  • my griff has off days too where he doesnt want to eat much solids.  i just keep offering solids at every meal and if he eats then he eats.  and if he doesnt, then he doesnt.  as long as hes keeping up with his formula then i dont worry too much.  he usually goes back to normal after a day or 2.

does your G have a fav food?  does he throw that away too?

  • no, if i give him a cracker or puffs he'll eat it a little more than anything else. last night i put some butter on the broccoli and that seemed to help him eat it a little more. ugh, it's so frustrating!
  • is he still drinking the same amount of milk?  maybe his throat is still a tini bit sore?  or hes teething?

    its totally frustrating!

  • I honestly just think they are getting into a phase where they realize they can express their opinions now and are starting to get more preferences about what they like vs. what they don't like.

DS used to eat anything we gave him. But as of about 2-3 weeks ago he's become more picky. The only veggie he'll eat plain is broccoli. Everything else has to be pureed and put into other food. So annoying!

I just keep trying to offer a wide variety of foods and switch it up every couple days. I figure that's the best I can do, I can't force him to eat and if he's truly hungry, he'll eat. He's not going to let himself starve.

  • Don't worry, this is a phase that will come and go (multiple times) - it also doesn't mean that your LO is becoming picky either (IMHO). I think sometimes people panic and think they need to get LO the same amount of food so they will resort to less healthy options because those work (therefore creating a picky eater basically).

Your LO may be having teething pain and eating just isn't comfortable. Just keep offering the same healthy food and in a couple of days your good eater will be back!

  • I agree with the above comments.  I have also heard that around this age, they have ups and downs with how much they eat.  Some days eating more and others eating less.  My DD does the same.  She will eat like she is starving one night and the next few nights, she drops it piece by piece to the floor so the dog can eat it...could be food preference Hmm
