3rd Trimester

Nose piercing now?

I only have 2 more weeks give or take a few days.. and I want to do something spontaneous since it's been quite a while since I have bought or done anything for myself. I can't remember if you have to remove all jewelry before you have the baby.. anyone know? thanks!

Re: Nose piercing now?

  • I don't see any reason why you'd have to take out earrings or nose piercings- nipple, belly button, or vaginal piercings probably yes, but not facial.

  • I have my nose pierced and i believe my Dr told me i would have to take it out incase they need to put the oxygen thingy in my nose, i guess it would make it easier to just pop it in if there was nothing in the way.   Maybe call and see how your Dr does it :)

  • I don't know about removing the jewelry, but be careful about getting any type of piercing now. Increased chance of infection because of the pregnancy. Also, cartilage (such as in the nose) doesn't have as much blood flow so it won't heal as fast and your chances of an infection are increased.

That said. Have fun being spontaneous with whatever you decide to do. :)

  • If you're talking about getting your nose pierced while pregnant, I don't know if I'd take that risk.  I know it's a relatively simple procedure and whatnot but the risk of infection, etc might not be worth it (thus the reason for signing the waiver).  If you only have a few weeks left in your pregnancy, wait until afterwards then get your nose pierced!

As far as taking out jewelry during labor and delivery... if you end up needing a c-section, everything would have to come out.

  • When I had my son they made me take out my lip piercing.  It closed up by the time I had tried to put it back in and I had to wait about 3 months to get it re-pierced.

  • Hey! I have worked in the piercing industry for a few years now. you will not be able to go get a piercing now, not till lo is out of you, any piercings can cause shock for lo and very high risk of infection. but buy yourself some pretty jewelry and take it out for the few hours that they need you to. Or do something fun and crazy with your hair! Thats what Ive been doing since i cant get tattooed or pierced this whole time booo!

  • I never had to take out or off any jewelery with either of mine. including my belly button, tounge, nose, earrings or any rings or anything... but im almost positive that you wont be able to get peirced while preg.

  • Please no new tattoos or piercings while pregnant!  Try a new hairstyle or color, eyelash extensions, or a wild fingernail polish instead.

  • I should ask my doc about this :) I have an eyebrow, lip and nose piercing, but worry about the lip one, it may actually close up.... and my nose I have never taken out.... hmmmm

  • As a former professional piercer I can tell you this: absolutely NO licensed piercer is going to pierce a pregnant woman. The liability is just far too high.

Besides, even a relatively easy to heal piercing like a nostril ring is probably more than you want to stress your body with. Body piercings to require quite a bit of attention, and right now would just be a bad time with a little one on the way.

As far as removing the piercings go, I still have several (including 2 nostril piercings) and was told for the most part since mine are all in my head I shouldn't have a problem keeping them in during L&D.

  • I wouldn't advise getting anything pierced or tattooed right now. The place I go to won't even do it on pregnant women because our bodies have so much extra blood and are going to swell much more... the piercing/tattoo won't heal in a normal amount of time and trust me that is the last thing you want to be worrying about taking care of a new piercing AND a new baby. But no you wouldn't need to remove the jewelry IF you did get it done. Doc's tend to advise taking out tongue and lip piercings, because some mom's will rip at them with their teeth as a way of coping with labor pain without even realizing they're doing it! And navel piercings too because they can rip through.

  • I actually had my nose pierced when I was 8 weeks pregnant. I went to a professional, licensed piercing shop and told them I was pregnant before- it was quick and painless. They had a follow up appointment 2 weeks after like they do for everyone and I had them autoclave and change piercing at 6 months- with no trouble..... That said I wouldn't do it now... I would probably just wait if I were you.
  • Thanks for all of your advise ladies!! I appreciate it! I will be waiting until after she gets here just incase the hospital advises not to keep it in. I've already had multiple piercings, and am pretty tat'ed already (half sleeve, stomach tat, etc) the pain is really nothing to me.. guess I am just bored waiting around lol.. but I will have plenty to do in two weeks when I meet my beautiful healthy baby and I don't want to risk putting any unwanted pressure on her.. GL with your pregnancies ladies!
