High-Risk Pregnancy

Question about GD testing.

I failed my one hour GD test on Monday, my number was 179, and am supposed to do the three hour on Saturday.  I didn't have GD with my first pregnancy, but everything about this pregnancy has been different than the first one.  I have suspected I have GD this time for awhile now, so I was not surprised when I failed it on Monday.  Also, baby is measuring quite large which I know is another symptom.

I take my blood sugar pretty regularly, I had a monitor because I have always been hypoglycemic before. My numbers have been consistently high for awhile now.  I started the diet that they make you do before the three hour test today.  It is making me really sick.  My question is, do you think it is okay to assume I have GD and skip the test on Saturday so I don't have to keep making myself sick the next few days?  I am willing to do the diet and everything that goes with it, I just don't see the point in putting myself through all of this when I am pretty sure I have it anyway.

I was going to call the nurse in the morning and ask her, but I thought that I would get your opinions first since a lot of you have already been through this.  Thank you so much ladies!

Re: Question about GD testing.

  • Depends on the doctor I think.  I know if you fail by so much you can, but some doctors will just let you begin the testing.  I know that I didn't want to do the 3 hour test and with my family history and score on the one hour they let me just begin treatment for GD.  It probably depends on a lot of factors and your doctor.  It is worth a call to ask and let the nurse know about your sickness the past few days, your mealplan may need to be altered.

  • What kind of diet do they have you on that is making you sick?  I just had to fast for 12 hours prior to the test.  Unless you go on a sugar/carb load spree up until testing day, I would think a normal diet would be fine in combination with the fasting.

They sent me a diet that I am supposed to do three days leading up to the test.  It is heavy in carbs and you eat dessert twice a day.  I NEVER eat like this normally and it is making my sugar levels go really high.  On the sheet, it says that it is important to do the diet because they need to see how my body is processing carbs.  Well, given how I feel and what my readings are, I would say that it isn't processing them well.  I am going to call when the office opens and BEG to skip this test.

  • It depends on a doctor, but usually to truly diagnose diabetes your blood sugar would have to be 140 and up after meals. In my schooling they said 200 and up is diabetes, but if you have issues 2 hours after meals then you need to be looking into diabetic medications because it means your borderline and at some point in the future your pancreas won't be working how it is, which is at a lower level of making insulin, and you can become diabetic. That's how I became diabetic. I had low blood sugars for a year and then I got super sick. I went to the ER because I actually had mono. I hadn't eaten in like 4 days and my blood sugar was 256....
