Babies: 6 - 9 Months

people who have kindles/nooks... questions!

So this is not baby related. I am thinking of getting some sort of e reader. I can't decide between a nook and a kindle... please help!

Here are my questions:

1) Can you lend books from your ereader to friends ereaders?

2) Can you check out book from the library

3) Can you only buy books from 1 source (i.e. Amazon only)

4) With these new ones (kindle fire, nook color), can you really browse the internet (like bump) and check your email?

5) If you have that new nook color, can you still read in bright light?

6) What kind do you have? I need help deciding what one to get! :)

Re: people who have kindles/nooks... questions!

  • My mother has a Nook that I rooted for her (converted it into a tablet - like an iPad so to speak).  She likes it way better that way.  She can surf the net & download all kinds of droid apps into her Nook now.

  • I bought the color nook simply for my DD because it was interactive and she could touch it and not only does it read back to her, but it has animation.  Now you have to buy the specific books that have that thought.

    1. Not sure haven't tried.

    2. I know you can borrow books.

    3. Again not sure I only buy off theirs.

    4. Yep, I use it to check facebook and stuff.

    5. Yep

    6. New color nook.

  • I have the regular Nook, and I love it!

    1. Some books are lendable - not all.

    2. I've heard you can check books out from the library, but I haven't tried it yet.

    3. You buy books from Barnes & Noble.

4 and 5. Mine is not a NookColor, so I'm no help there.

    6. Nook 1st Edition - now on sale for $89, it looks like! :)link

    HTH!

  • 1) Can you lend books from your ereader to friends ereaders? Some books, I don't think you can do all.  I don't have anyone I know to lend with yet though.2) Can you check out book from the library Not sure.3) Can you only buy books from 1 source (i.e. Amazon only) Have only tried from Barnes and Noble4) With these new ones (kindle fire, nook color), can you really browse the internet (like bump) and check your email?  Yes, the only thing I have trouble with is watching videos...doesn't seem to stream well5) If you have that new nook color, can you still read in bright light? I haven't had any problems.6) What kind do you have? I have the nook color and LOVE it.  I highly recommend it.  They had an upgrade last spring, which allowed it to do soo much more and made it more like a tablet than an ereader (although still awesome at that).  But DS is 3 and can use it ...

  • I have a Kindle.

    1. As PP said, I'm pretty sure you can lend some books, but not all. And if you lend out a book, you are unable to access it for that time.
    2. My local library just started lending out books electronically. I guess it just depends on if your local library does it or not. At mine, you have to have a library card and it works the same way as it would if you were checking out a paper book - they only lend out a couple copies (if that) and you often end up on a waiting list, and then you only get the book for, say, 10 days.
    3. As far as I know, with the Kindle, you can only buy from Amazon.
    4. Not sure about this one.
    5. n/a.
    6. Like I mentioned, I have a Kindle! I love it. When I got it I didn't have the desire to use it to surf the net - I just wanted to use it for reading. It's super easy to use and the battery life is amazing. If you're looking for something that you can easily use the internet on, or for LO to be able to interact with, I'd go with an iPad or something of the like.

  • 1) Can you lend books from your ereader to friends ereaders?

You need to have the same ereader and it depends on the book actually

    2) Can you check out book from the library

Depends on the library.  The one's by me you can check out a book with a Nook but not a Kindle

    3) Can you only buy books from 1 source (i.e. Amazon only)

    Yes

    4) With these new ones (kindle fire, nook color), can you really browse the internet (like bump) and check your email?

    From what I'm told yes

    5) If you have that new nook color, can you still read in bright light?

I don't have one, but from what I'm told no you can't.  The non-color ones work because they aren't back-lit and use E-ink.  The color ones are back lit so you can have some issues.  Think of the non-color ones as regular book, you can read in direct sunlight but you need a light on at night.

    6) What kind do you have? I need help deciding what one to get! :)

I have the regular Nook and I love it.
