C-sections

C/S because of fibroid?

Just wondering if anyone has had to have a c/s because of a fibroid.

I have a low lying fibroid at the bottom of my cervix right next to the birth canal. 9 weeks ago it was the size of a nectarine. I go in for a check this week. At this point I'm a 50/50 chance of c/s or vaginal. Of course if it shows growth at my u/s this week I might be a 75/25 for c/s.

Just curious if there were any other c/s ladies with a similar issue. thanks! :)

Re: C/S because of fibroid?

  • I had a bit of a different issue, but similar.  I have a large fibroid that I didn't know about til pregnancy at the top of my uterus- I guess it likely grew in the early weeks.  Everything was fine in the pregnancy - other than just the discomfort of it being there and pretty much in my lungs.  :)

I labored reasonably well, but kind of slowly.  Then stalled at 8 cm and ended up with a csection.  They could tell that the top of my uterus had not been contracting well due to the fibroid.  Also, he was in kind of a funky position - just tilted to one side that might have been because of it too .

So even though it was at the top, it still caused issues in the end.

Post partum, my doctor is also blaming it for the fact that I am still bleeding bright red at 6 weeks.

If it grows again in my next pregnancy (assuming there is one), I will likely just go ahead and schedule a csection.  We shall see.

  • I'm so sorry you had such progress and then ended up a c/s and still bleeding. That is rough. Thanks for responding though. I'm having a tough time finding other fibroid ladies. It's good to know that even up high they can be very disruptive, puts where mine is in a bit more perspective if that makes sense.

Have you thought about having it taken out? Is that an option? I've already spoken to my fertility doctor and if it's still a issue post labor he wants to remove it so it won't compromise any future pregnancies.

  • Hi - I rarely post but I wanted to respond.  I had a tough time finding people with this issue too, even though it's so common!  I am having a scheduled c-section because of a fibroid, but my situation is a little different.  I had a 10 cm fibroid removed in April via myomectomy so a c-section was necessary.  I found out that another fibroid grew after my surgery but my doctor said not to worry.  It has actually shrunk a little bit.  My guess is that your doctor will monitor it and decide from there.  Try not to worry:)  Best of luck!

  • this is my issue, i am glad you posted about it. I am having a scheduled c section due to 8 cm fibroid. it is not close to cervix opening, it is much lower in pelvic area, but ob thinks that baby's head might get stuck:-(. i am going back and forth on this, but i would rather not risk. baby's head is measuring big, i am 34w now. i had issues with this fibroid at around 16-17w, it started to grow and gave horrible pain for a week or so.

yes, i am thinking of taking it out after baby is born ( i guess i will have to wait at least 6 months).

  • I've thought about having it taken out. But, I am just scared of the risks involved.  Since it doesn't seemed to have had impact on me getting pregnant or the pregnancy itself (other than delivery), I am inclined to wait for removal til after our second (and last) baby.  I have heard that there is some risk of hysterectomy etc. when a fibroid is removed.  But, maybe that is outdated info.  I will likely explore all options over the coming months, but the likelihood is that I will wait.

They are concerned about the same thing with mine and it's location that the baby won't be able to get through. Tongue Tied

When did they decide that you would be a c/s? I'm hoping mine doesn't start to cause pain but I had some twinging in the general area today. Boo.

I haven't gotten into finding out the complications of having it removed but I will now. That is scary! Ahhhh stupid fibroid!
