Trouble TTC

Is a beta @ 11 dpo a complete waste?

I have my cycle follow-up this Friday @ 11 dpo.  It was supposed to be Monday but my RE was booked Monday and Tuesday.  How are we going to decide next steps if I haven't gotten a +HPT?  Do you think she'll try to do a beta?  Normal protocol is to only do a beta after a + HPT but I've never been in so early.

I know you guys aren't psychic but if you've been in this situation what did your RE do?

After more than 2 years of fertility treatments, FET did the trick!
IVF March 2012 - BFP! - Severe OHSS = 8 days in the hospital in kidney failure
No heartbeat at 10w6d
FET August 27,2012 = BFP!
It's a boy!

Re: Is a beta @ 11 dpo a complete waste?

  • We get betas here before a +HPT. It's super early and definitely nerve wracking.

It kind of just makes the process seem even longer, but maybe that's also because our first one was a 5.7, which is the verge of pregnant (I think anything over 5 is considered pregnant). After that it dropped off.

    Good Luck!

  • I say, if it's covered by insurance or not too expensive, why no?  But since it's too early to show up on HPT, just realize it could come back lower than 25 if it's "positive"  but then you could go in for your second later.  Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies!  I have no idea if a beta is covered or not.  I've never had one.  Nothing else IF related is covered so I would assume not.  At this point the cost would be a drop in the bucket compared to what we've spent this cycle.

I guess I'll see what the Doc recommends.  FX!

  • My RE claims that because blood tests are more sensitive, you should be able to get a positive after 10dpo in most cases. Good luck!

  • I just had my first beta done at 11dpo - had to go in for other bloodwork and they did that one along with the others.  She said that if I were pg, it would show up on the blood test, but might be a low positive.

    Good luck!!

  • My clinic does betas for IVF at 11 dpo and 13 dpo.  However, there are often times people that get negative betas at 11 dpo that have perfectly normal pregnancies.  I was one of those people.  Consequently, I don't really recommend a beta at 11 dpo unless you are aware of the possibility of a false negative and will do another beta a few days later.

    Good luck, hon!

ETA - At 11 dpo, a 5 is considered positive.

Thanks!  I guess a "false negative" or the uncertainty of the beta is what concerns me.  If we don't do a beta I'm not sure what we'll do at the appointment.

I'm really hoping I get a BFP before I go!  That would obviously make things easier.  Stick out tongue

  • My RE does a beta at 12DPIUI for injects cycles if that makes you feel any more comfortable with the thought.
